I'm pretty sure that Canadian customs would like to get a bunch of money out of you if you were to bring one back, but the Americans would most likely want to put you in jail.

A lot of firearms items are on their no export list and I'm pretty sure that just about anything relating to an AR requires export permits from the State Dickpartment.

If it has a barrel or is over $100 you will need export permits and it must be exported by a licensed dealer.

Legalese section has more info.

An AR upper receiver requires a licenced exporter and an export permit.
Yes, you could buy one and bring it back.
No, you could not do it legally.

But US ITAR doesn't stop you at the border going up from the states. They have to pull you over on the way to the border, correct? I've bought a few things before I even knew ITAR existed and had them shipped to Point Roberts, and made a quick trip to pick them up. I guess I was breaking the law but didn't even know it.

not that you should, but some ppl might buy a couple bags of paintball/ airsoft stuff and say its just parts for airsoft/painball

Last couple of times coming over the Peace Bridge there has been a US roadcheck just before the bridge. I think it was more a general "gauge your character/possible RIDE" but they were definitely border agents.

False. They can pull you back if not threw Canadian customs. Happened recently to a guy coming up with a whack of gear. All lost to US customs after getting over to Canadian booth.

I thought in the US the controlled part is the upper because they have regulations about barrel length. (has to be over 16"). I think it would be a lot easier to bring a an AR lower over the border. but still illigal

Can't register AR lower in Canada, separate issue from the non-legality of taking it out of the US.

Stripped upper, upper with barrel, still subject to controls. Some barrel lengths aren't readily exportable.
A stripped lower would be more difficult, because in both the US and Canada it is a "firearm". Subject to controls both sides of the border.
These items are imported/exported, but this is done by licenced exporters/importers.

I just heard of a incident of a guy trying to board a flight back to Canada with a M14 stock in his bag. He had a nice little chit chat with US Customs. In the end they were nice and only took his stock. But he also received a 5 year ban from entering the US.

I guess I would ask why? There are many vendors in Canada who took the trouble to either go through the legal channels to import them for you or manufacture them. I would support them as the more business they get the more products in the future they can probably offer.
