We were hunting partridge and chicken a few years back and bring a newb out with us. I am standing in a summer fallow field at the end of a slough so I wasn't exactly hidden. A bird pops up and flies directly at me. Protocol says I let the bird get past me and I shoot once it flies by and is going away from everyone.
Newb lines up on the bird with me in the direct line of fire. I was about 80-90 yards away. The pellets rattle off the barrel of my gun and hit me in a few spots on my heavy wool coat. I hit the dirt and lie flat on the ground after the first shot and the SOB fires two more rounds. Thanks to the distance and the heavy wool coat I was fine but my blood pressure sure wasn't.
I start screaming a long list of every nasty word I know and the fellow says
" I guess we screwed up " I got in my truck and drove home. Never have or ever will hunt with him again.
IMO the most dangerous newbs to hunt with are adults. They think they hav to act like they know everything rather than admit they need to learn. I really enjoy taking youngsters out because they are eager to learn and listen to what they are told. I feel safer with my 12 year old with me than a lot of adults I've hunted with.
