Hello Ladies and Gents,
I'm seriously looking to get a super short shotgun to carry when I work in the woods. I would like to keep it as close as possible to the legal limit (24'' I think it is).
What should I go for ? I would prefer to still have 4+ rounds.
thanks in advance for the info

Pistol grips are pretty useless in real life (defense in the woods). Gow with a stock of some sort and a shot barrel.

Then there must be a laser guided TOW system installed in my slugs or something...I can shoot a pistol gripped shotgun just fine thank you. To the OP, my maverick 88 with factory mossberg pistol grip is 28" OAL with 18.5" barrel. As with most pump action shotguns, 18" is about as short as you would want to go before you start getting close to that 26" mark. Others have found the 8.5" grizzly can be made just over 26" with a short LOP stock. I would want to check the muzzle velocity before packing one of those but others seem to like it. My choice is pistol gripped maverick 88 as it is very lightweight with an aluminum reciever and polymer trigger group.

Roger that !
So what is the shortest stock I can put on a 12.5 rem 870 ?

I think the knocks collapsable stock or whatever its called (not for me), or you could modify others by cutting the butt, make sure you don't let the overall length get below 26" or its technically restricted. Take a look at speedfed stocks ...i am a fan.

Dlask 8.5 with the hougue law enforcment stock. Still not restricted. And if you could carry legal....pistol grip works just fine.

Why do you say that?

I've seen to many guys 'who can shoot a pistol grip shotgun just fine' make multiple misses on an IPSC sized target because it was further away, closer, higher, lower than they're used to shooting. If you think you may need to save your life at different ranges with a moving target, (think bear) a stock and preferably sights are the best way to go for a first shot hit on target.

WTF does that have to do with the pistol grip?? Pistol grips are the best thing for pump action shotguns, they help you hold the buttstock tighter to your shoulder.

Your hand on the pump action is actually trying to push the shotgun away from your shoulder which is stupid really and I find with a pistol grip I can counter that foreward force better.

Well thanks for backing up your statement but I disagree with your reasoning.

I think NaOH is talking about the stand alone pistol grip, and not a pistol gripped full stock. Pistol grip full stock is the way to go. I have a Grizzly 8.5" threaded for chokes with a Speedfeed IV short LOP and a fat Limbsaver on it. Very nice. Got Wilson combat sights on it and the grip makes it easier to line up the sights.

Pistol grip stocks are what I use on shotguns too.

Pistol grips are a different animal.
