New to Rimfires!

Hey there,

Purchased a couple big guns so far, and recently started looking into picking up a 22lr or similar caliber for cheap plinking fun. Hoping you guys don't mind answering a couple questions that I have.

First off being, semi or bolt, the gun I would like to acquire has to have a drop out magazine, but since both these actions have that, what is better? I don't need rapid shooting, but does a bolt have any advantages? Accuracy?

Second, what is considered a good buy these days in terms of new rimfires, I noticed price ranges vary across the board, with bargain guns to be had by all. What do you prefer? (New btw). Marlin? Savage? Remington? Mossberg?

Any suggestions and guidance appreciated!

dollar for dollar, a bolt action will always be more accurate. There are accurate semis, and ways to improve the accuracy of others however.

Good value - see if you can find a winchester wildcat, either in a heavy or sporter weight barrel. I think Prophet river may have some sporters left.
 
Accuracy will be a lot better in a bolt compared to a semi. One thing I like is I can load the next round when I want. If I want to fire one round I can without having to take a round from the chamber. No not a big deal but when teaching new shooters it's just a little extra safety.

A semi though can be a lot of fun when you just rapid fire it :p

Personally though to me it's the pin point accuracy when plinking. Taking the primer out of a shotgun shell at 50 yards makes one feel really good about themselves :D

I can also fire my bolt action .22 decently fast, not as fast as a semi but good enough for me.

If you're looking at a bolt look into the Savage Mark II series. They are amazingly accurate and come with either 5 or 10 round mags. Add to this their LOW CHEAP cost mine was well worth the money and Im planning on buying a second one.
 
Depends on what kinda stuff you like but I love my Ruger sr22. I find it accurate and reliable. Plus there is loads of after market "toys" you can add to it...
 
Haha, so, the only brand no one likes so far is Mossberg? I think you guys hit all the others already. At the same time, I've been looking up what you suggested, and for what I want, a CZ is out since they seem to run $500 and up.

I was in you shoes not all that long ago, bougth an anshutz 64 bolt, sako M78 bolt, 2 anschutz semis, a 10/22 semi, a CZ bolt, Thompson Center Semi, Anshchutz 54 Bolt. I would suggest buy either a cz if you want bolt or Thompson Center if you want Semi, the Thompson Center is more accurate than the CZ's, its the r-55 heavy barrel, match barrel made by shillen. Its super ammo sensitive and needs to be broken in with cci's which are hard to find, bolts tend to be a lot less ammo sensitve. Of the above mention I have the CZ, TC and Anni 54 left. You absolutely won't go wrong buying CZ just make sure you buy from a legitimate dealer who can offer warranty support not all site sponsors are authorized dealers.
 
Yes, it depends on what you want it for...plinking, a substitute for something bigger (and more expensive), gopher hunting or keeping the skill level up? I chose a semi auto 22 for my first firearm purchase because I had experience with single shot .22's and wanted something with a magazine.
 
Ok, then let's say I want a 22 for plinking and grouse killing. Don't have alot of money to spend, so looking for a reasonable start. It needs to shoot. Won't be using it to keep skill up, probably to start kids shooting though. Either that or start them on the 300 wm.

Yeah they would probably be more into it if you start them on the 22 not the 300 wm... plus you can do a lot more shooting with the 22. Much more affordable
 
Fun plinker new a Ruger 10/22. As you progress, you can make it into what ever you want, tack driver or what ever you want it to look like. Lot's of modifications to be made and you don't need to drop a whole bunch of money on it at one time. Accessories galore.

Go with the savage/Stevens .22's

The Stevens models don't have the accutrigger and thus cheaper, under $200

Savages have so many different models its not even funny. I went with the Model "G" which has the wood stock, iron sights, and 10 round mag. $250 I think I paid for it brand new.

Bagged many grouse with it and finally dropped a scope onto it.

Once again, amazing accuracy!

Most bolt & Lever action .22's are reliable unless they are used & abused. Cheap semi .22's typically jam. I have shot numerous semi .22's, new & used, and other than the Ruger 10/22, all experienced many misfires & misloads (jams). It's amazing how many people have told me their 597 doesn't jam only to prove themselves wrong at the range. Then they blame the ammo. The only .22's in the $200-$300 range that may be reliable are bolt actions unless you are lucky enough to get a great deal on a quality used one.

There's just so many options for modding and upgrading the 10/22 to fit anybody's needs. They're a good choice, IMO.
 
Well thanks for all the replies guys! Alot more confident in what I'm looking for. Being a guy that doesn't like buying a rifle that I need to put more money into to upgrade, I'll be taking a good look at Savage Mark II's.
 
savages are accurate and often do outshoot most other brands, the CZ scout though you can find new for about 400 and its real hard to beat at that price. don't forget there will come a time when you want to upgrade, trade or sell and CZ will do you better than Savage.
