GSG 1911 vs ruger 22/45 which one?

I would buythe ruger over the GSG, some reports on the gsg from the american sites are saying the plug breaks off the end of the guiderod....

ruger 22/45 on the other hand is the essence of reliable... easy to get magazines and lots of upgrade parts if you want.

Ruger 22/45 vs GSG 1911 .22lr....

I have both.... and I like 'em both.

I bought the Ruger MkIII 45/22 with 4 1/2" slabside barrel awhile back from WS.

I bought the GSG 1911 .22lr about 2 months ago from a local dealer.

The Ruger is OAL the same as a 1911 and has the same grip angle. But it is a lot thinner in the grip area than a standard 1911. Ruger's have a long standing reputation for quality & reliability, however. Comes with 2 mags in the box & spare mags are around $35 each [+ tax]

The GSG 1911 is dimensionally a very close copy of a 1911A1 .45ACP, although it is a tad lighter due to the alloyed metal used in it's construction. The controls on it are the same as a 1911A1. Mine runs 100% and I'm very pleased with it's reliability & accuracy. Came with 1 mag. I have since added 2 spare mags for ~ $30 each [+ tax]

I say handle them both and go with the one you prefer. I have both and I like 'em both. But the GSG has come with me on my last 5 treks to the range, while the Ruger has stayed home in the safe.

There has been reports of a very few GSG barrel bushings breaking off at the legs thereby allowing the recoil spring plug to come off the guiderod. The issue has been attributed to a "non steel" barrel bushing that can break over time. [However, that said, I have seen steel barrel bushings fail on 1911's in .45ACP as well resulting in the recoil spring plug going down range].

The fix for the GSG seems to be the installation of a steel barrel bushing which then negates the failure issue. I am told that the new lot of GSG's coming out of Germany will have steel barrel bushings. I put a magnet on mine & when it didn't grab replaced it with a steel Colt bushing and put the stock one in the bag with the spare front sites. Like I said above, my GSG 1911 .22lr runs like a champ.

Browning and colt also have 22lr 1911s coming out. It will be interesting to see how they stack up.

Actually, it will be interesting to see how much they will sell for, as we all know a substantial part of it will be just paying for the "name" on the side of the slide.

That's the first I heard about colt and browning making 1911 .22 pistols, and the first thing that popped in my head was how much more than the GSG will they be? If they're around the same price I'd consider it, but until then my pennies are being saved for the GSG

I like my GSG, very happy i bought a dedicated .22 pistol. You could make an argument for any .22 system, how-ever for the money the gsg is very nice!!! Miles from the sig .22, the AA slide for the glock is as much as the GSG.. Like stated above your going to pay for the name with most other makers.

I couldn't find many people that were un happy with the gsg, and the ones that were.. Rebuilt it how they liked it. So i bit the hook, happy i did.

I need to get some low profile grips, the wife has issue getting to the mag release. Plenty of parts around for it.

That only happens when you flip the guide spring around and put it backwards. If it breaks we will fix it no questions asked

Best regards,
Scott

I haven't heard much about the Browning at all and I'm looking forward to finding out more about it. The Colt .22 1911, to be clear, is not manufactured by Colt at all; but rather is just another Umarex/Walther product that uses the Colt name under license, just like the "Colt" M4 .22 carbine.

Hopefully it will be a nice little plinker, but given the mixed reviews of the .22 M4, I'm not holding my breath on this latest offering from Uramex/Walther... Even if it is a decent and reliable shooter, I doubt the Colt licensed .22 1911 will be in the same price range as the GSG... but then again you never know... time will tell I guess.

Their magazine's capacity is 12 rounds. Will they produce special made-for-Canada 10 round magazines?
