hunting with lever actions

Don't rule out Marlins! I've used both, and Marlin are much better quality IMHO. Although I did take a deer this year with my m94...one shot, iron sights, forty yards, right in the head.

Love lever actions.

i own 3 marlins and these are the rifles that i seem to shoot all my game with. If you are walking or in the bush a lever is the way to go!
Leverevolution bullets are awesome!

I've always enjoyed hunting with lever action rifles. As a kid, I used an old 30 WCF Winchester 1894 with the stock wrist held together with friction tape. The rifling was barely there, but I was able to bring the deer home just the same. Most shots in the trees are under a 100 yds, so a 30-30, 32 special will get the job done.

Good lever actions for a greater distance are the M88 Winchester (308) or a Savage 99 (308). Both are excellent rifles and powerful enough for most North American critters.

40 yards and you missed the heart/lung vitals by 3 feet. You need a scope.

:HR:

LMAO!! Quite right! Unfortunately I wasn't convinced my round would pound through the thick brush that was obscuring the heart /lung shot. Usually I take my Marlin 444, which is scoped, but it was pissing rain so I tried out the M94 I had just picked up from a CGN'r for CAS.

I love lever guns - I own an old 38-55 M94 that was my grandfathers, a Savage 99 250-3000 takedown, my 45 colt, and my Marlin 444...which is up for sale right now, but only because I want a guide gun in 45-70

Levers are fast shooting and great bush guns. As said, 30.30 is fine out to about 150, looses its poop fast after that. Safe guns with exposed hammer. My only complaint or dislike is that if you are in and out of a vehicle, you have to jack the rounds out manually. Not a huge problem, but doesn't unload as nice as as a drop down or drop out mag. I really like shooting levers. Lots of nice Winchesters out there to be had and Marlin makes a pretty rifle as well. I don't care much for the Mossburg, it operates fine, but the iron sights really suck and have little adjustment unless you machine down the rear sight leaf.

thats why i shoot a browning BLR and i also have win 94

I have a Marlin 336 in 30/30 (shot my first Mule Deer @ 175yds with it when I was a kid) and a Browning BLR 81 in 358 Win. Just shot a nice 5x5 Whitetail @ 90yds with the 358 (see avatar) . I find myself grabbing the BLR all the time because I can shoot out to 350-400yds with it. Groups into 4" at 300yds with 225 Partitions :D

Savage 1895/1899/99 . Gotta love'm. Can use spitzer bullets and up to 308 power to boot.

Bet you can't have just one!

I too am a lever fan. Easy to carry, fast to shoulder and reload. Depending on the caliber good for any big game (except maybe large grizzly) in North America. I think I have all the bases covered with my small collection. A mod 94 (circa 1942) in 30-30, a mod 94BB in 356 win, a win mod 9422, and a Savage 99F in 300 savage. Only the 99 has a scope the rest are Williams Fool proof peep sights.
