Thinking about the .22 hornet as my ground hog tweener rifle. It should fill the gap beween my .17HMR and 6mmbr. I find the .17HMR starts to run out of steam after 100 yds for a large hog and the 6mmbr is way too loud for a lot of areas that I hunt.
I am looking for opinions on: Noise, effective range, cost of factor ammo, reloading quirks and anything else you can think of.
I was going to go with the CZ 527 American for rifle but am interested in your opinions on that as well.
Thanks

I have always liked the 22 hornet. I now have a hornet project underway. I am having a Marlin 62 Levermatic being rebarreled to the hornet round. Always wanted a lever action Hornet.Should prove interesting.,

Hey Sako6br, I don't mean to hijack but here's the deal. I load my .223 Rem down to 22 Hornet velocity with 55gr. V-max's using Unique for gopher shooting that is. But, I'm currently building a 6mmBR based on a Stevens 200 action. One of my plans is to go with either a Shilen barrel or a gain twist barrel as short as 20". What is your barrel lenght, what bullet works for you, mine will be strictly a BR rig. Any suggestions? How accurate is your 6BR?

I've used both Gailard and MacLennon barrels on my rig. Both are fine choices. My Son's M70 6br has a Shilen 1:14 twist which was given to me by a friend who shoots Bench Rest. The Barrel that is. I don't believe in the gain twist theory as I think it is redundant. A 20" barrel my make it a little more accurate (.025-.050" smaller groups) because of the stiffer barrel but it will be louder, have more muzzle jump and less velocity. You need 28" to burn all the powder in a 6mmbr. My current barrel is a 27 ",1:10 twist cut rifled. My favorite bullet is the 75 gr v-max for hogs and am still searching for a good long range paper punching load. Accuracy for my pet load has been beween .25 and .75 moa. depending if the planets are aligned or how I hold my tongue. Hope this helps.

Amphibious, thanks for the link... it takes me nowhere, just like the search function.

I have a BRNO Fox with double set triggers in 22 Hornet. With 35 gr Vmax and a full case of IMR4227, I can reach out a touch a ground hog easily out to 200 yards. Not really noisy and fairly accurate as long as it is not too windy.

Sako, thanks for your prompt reply. For sure, a 20" barrel will not burn the powder effectively and again, the report will be louder and velocity suffers. But then again, all BR shooters wear hearing protection. Thus accuracy being the main criteria and being that we shoot paper, not rams at 500, knock down power is pointless. But are you telling me that you get .75 MOA at 300? Because if a 27" barrel with a 1:10 will suitably launch a 75 gr V-Max, then it's a serious consideration for me. Again, didn't mean to highjack, but if we can talk about this in another thread, then we can do that. As far as your 22 Hornet goes, I've contemplated that for sure, 'till I learned that I could load down my .223 to match.

I have a .17hmr, a .223 and a .243.
I also like my .22 k hornet for gophers! More poke than the .17 hmr, it really tears the gophers up with the 35 vmax, and it has about a 50 yard advantage on the 17.
The mistake I made was going with the Ruger. If I was doing it again I would buy the CZ. I have the 527 in .223 and love it.
The hornet is very easy on powder, about half of a .223 load. A lot less noise too, but you won't find tons of brass for it in the garbage cans at the range, like you can with .223.
If I only had one .22 centrefire it would be the .223 for it's coyote ability.
I have shot yotes with the hornet, but only inside 100 yards(esp as I have it zeroed with 35 grain vmax)

I have 2 hornets and find the short barrel Ruger #3 is quite loud. The Browning micro med. is nice. The hornet is a fine choice & my fav. gopher gun. I also have a 222,& 223. With a pair of 243s. The hornet gets shot way more than the other 22s. Good luck.

Mount Sweatness
I agree the 17HMR can kill at 150 yds but they are rarely one shot drops at that range.
The Hornet has the same energy at 200 yds as the 17HMR at the muzzle.
Thanks for all the great repies guys!
gitrdun, PM me if you want to talk further regarding 6mmbr.

I got a 223 and 22 Hornet and really they aren't in the same class. The 223 is much louder and definitely more powerful but the Hornet still can get the job done. Your choice of a 527 hornet is sound you might also want to look at the Ruger 77/22 (newer models) mine shoots really well. If you don't reload you really need to take it up for a hornet - factory ammo is pretty expensive. If you don't want to reload, I would recommend that you get a 223, ammunition prices are much more palatable.

I have a 22 Hornet made by Zastava for Marstar Canada. Its built on the "mini Mauser" action. It was a "prototype" model that never turned into an order due to the start of the Balkan war in 1990. I have tried several different commercial rounds in it, and it seems to love the 35 grain, 3100 fps, Hornady V-Max the best. It can easily drop a coyote under 150 yards, and gophers up to 200 yards. It is very quiet, almost no recoil, and points well. Next to my SKS's, this rifle gets the most use. It has a detachable 5 round magazine, which I'm not crazy about, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.

I'd "K" any Hornet just like I'd "Mashburn" any Bee, makes the round much more user friendly, preserves your brass and helps build more accurate ammo IMHO. These would both be my favorite .22 CFs.

I had a chance to shoot my uncles savage model 40 recently. It seems like an interesting round. We compared it to my 22-250 on a 2'x6" log and I have to say I felt it was lacking power for large predators but the recoil and noise levels were very impressive and made it very fun to shoot. The rifle itself was typical savage. A neat little action. If they would only make a 221 fireball version I'd be all over it.

X2 on the CZ527. Got a 223 and its one of my fave rifles. I am loading for 5 cals so shooting the 223 is cheap! Sure is a pretty rifle-nothing I can fault on it at all especially since it is a MiniMauser actually designed for the small cals. Also has a decent trigger with a set function. All in all a handsome gun that shoots like a hot damn. Same weight as my CZ452 22lr. And no problem to get either of them in lefthand action. Shooting my 22s a lot more these days and its smiles all the way. Also tend to be accurate guns. :)
