Sig 226 and related models in 9mm??? Any info and prices?

My friend went to the range (without me!!!) and tried a Sig 226. He loved it and had his vastly improved targets here to show me. Apparently the range guys even gave him some advice on his trigger finger. He wanted to see the Berretta 92FS that he's never shot but is interested in. He wasn't allowed to rent it, so went with the Sig 226 at the recommendation of the range attendant. He shot 3 boxes. He is pretty gung ho about a Sig now.

He has a larger budget to work with than I do, he asked me to find out the price here on the Sig 226 and see what else they have in their lineup. I know this is a highly regarded pistol and brand. I saw the 226 for $1099 online. He was wondering about the better model Sigs and how much they are. I couldn't find much other than the price for this one model.

So if anyone has an approximate description, availability and pricelist for the Sig lineup, please let me know and I'll pass it on to him. He is someone who appreciates quality and will spend the additional funds to get it. His budget is about $1000 to under $2000 taxes in for an excellent quality 9mm.

Maybe there is another brand/model he should look at? Any info is appreciated. But this is his favourite gun he's shot so far. He's a newbie like me, but he loves his toys.
 
I would highly recommend looking into the 226 Elite Stainless model. I have 2 of them and I think they're great. The stainless Elites are a bit more expensive than the alloy framed Sigs but I believe the extra cost is worth it. Its the lightest recoiling 9mm I've ever shot and the short reset trigger on the Elites make for very fast follow up shots.
 
What is the cost difference on an Elite? This is what he can rent in Sig at the particular gun range in Detroit (some of these have barrel lengths not legal over here so can be excluded):

The only new Sig that would interest me is a P226 E2. Other than that I would say get an older model from back when they had legendary QC, rather than the increasingly poor QC of today.

Also I would avoid beavertail Sigs...the standard frame already puts your hand where it needs to be, and there is really no way to get hammer bite from a Sig. The beavertails are fairly pointless, although I guess they don't hurt any. Some people find they actually position their hand a little lower but I don't see it. Anyway, lower is worse, so the best you can say for the beavertail frames is they probably aren't making anything any worse, but they might be.

The short reset trigger, however, is really, really nice. If I hadn't given someone else my P226, I would probably convert it to an E2 and throw in the SRT. In fact, I may still do that for the current owner, just because man, the E2 feels good, and the SRT is very, very slick.
 
There are a lot of dealer who carries them: Questar, Wolverine, Epps, etc... See their official website and look for a model with the options he'd like.

Personnaly, I would look for the P226 E2 which comes with SRT, night sights and the newer smaller grip (if needed). Other than that, the Elite models are very nice, you can get it either full stainless or with alloy frame; comes with SRT, night sights and beavertail.

Just for kicks I handled a P226 E2 back-to-back with a store owned P226 and found I liked the standard P226 better than the E2 model (I also own a standard P226).

Great gun, looks fantastic and feels perfect in my hands.

The dark elite models have fancy aluminum grips that are very nice, worth the $1200 price over the $1050 or so for the standard edition.

PS - make sure you handle the stainless one before purchasing it - I did and did not like the weight of it

Not exactly inexpensive (about $1600 plus tax), but worth every penny. I don't know current stock levels, I had to wait over two months for mine.

Good luck, get a Sig and you will not regret it.
 
i had a couple stainless sigs 226 and 220 and rexcewntly got a basic 226 nitron finish and like it better second time around. prefer the weight of the alluminum as well. but i dont think he should overlook the Beretta. I have INOX model and its a beutiful gun.
 
Sig Elite is a great choice, the older W. German sigs are as good as they come. Blackwater Tactical, has a cool factor and collectibility factor that won't go away anytime soon. The choices are many. The German guns do go through a much more stringent QC regiment than do the U.S. made Sigs, so consequently are better, noticeable to some, irrelevant to others as the U.S. made Sigs are still better than most other handguns. HK is another Make he may want to take a look at. P2000 in 9mm is pretty hard to beat.

I'm not strapped for cash but my friend is definitely more willing to spend. He's looking for a great quality 9mm and a 7.62 (CZ858, SKS or ?). I really like a Kimber 1911 and a 22 pistol for cheap practice. Then we're going to swap at the range, we now have 4 to shoot. This is the plan. What we actually buy is still not decided. Just want to do some research and try as many as we can.

He just has more disposable income and can drop $2500 if need be. I'm looking to be in the $1500 range.

if you want one pistol for pure accuracy, 2000 should get him into a nice sig p210 9mm that will be a treat to shoot and hone your shooting skills like nothing else can. Its always nice to have one of the 4 that is super accurate.
 
I have a Sig P226 E2 in 9mm, and an P229 in .40cal. If you're hands aren't large like mine, you will find the "E2" or "Enhanced Ergonomics" models may fit your hand better, and thusly you will be more accurate with it. If the regular model fits your hand better, I agree with SteveHester, the Hogue G10 grips are amazing. (they cost about $150). Next on my wish list is the P229E2 in 9mm.
 
There is slightly more recoil with the .40. Ammo cost is about 30-40% more than 9mm. For someone just starting out, 9mm might be a better option.
