This Fall I bought some guns from a fellow, and this old 94 was one of them.

The rifle was made in 1913. I am not sure who purchased it new, but it came into the hands of the father of the fellow who sold it to me. It still has the saddle ring. I had to put a different butt stock on, as the one it came with was homemade. (Thanks goes to "Rod", a fellow CGNr, for the stock).

The old rifle has plenty of character, but seems to have good rifling.

The belt looks to be handmade, as are the cartridge loops. The knife sheath is factory, but there has been a new belt loop sewn on the replace the old one. The 18 cartridges are Winchester Silvertips. Inscribed on the belt and the sheath are the father's name, and Herb Lake 1931. Herb Lake was a Manitoba mining town.

Apparently the old rifle is a "Belgian Congo" model. The following info has been taken from "The Great War" forum:

"BELGIAN CONGO VARIATION OF MODEL 1894 SADDLERING CARBINE IN 30-30

About 200 of these were ordered from Winchester in 1913 to outfit the Belgian Infantry. Serial number's fall in about the 65X,### range. They've got a different type of sling swivel mounted on the side of the stock and the side of the forearm band-different than Winchester's ever done; rear carbine leaf sight is measured in meters, the gumwood stocks are virtually unused retaining all the barrel and magazine blue"

Well Mr. K, up until now all I have ever heard is that a 30-30 is good for 100 yards, maybe 200 on a hail mary type shot.
Now, all you have to do is set your sights, hold dead on the sight setting, and knock off whatever, a kilometre away!
It sure would be interesting to see if they calculated those figures on the sights. Do you have any place you could try long range shooting at a BIG target on the prairie?
Very interesting rifle.

I do have the rear sling swivel attachment, but am reluctant to disfigure the "rifle" butt stock. If I find a carbine butt, then I'll put it on.

H4831: Lucky for us old guys that a meter is only a "bit" longer than a yard!!:p I'll see if I can find a flat spot around here where I can try the old girl out at 800 meters. I don't like showing off, but I may have to shoot with one eye open....:p:p

Now THERE is a carbine that commands respect. It ain't been laying about doing nothing all its life. I'll bet it has earned its keep ten times over. Keep shooting it.
