Although I only have one small caliber center fire (17Rem Fireball) I really like it and could see myself trying others as funds permit. I'm curious as to what others here are shooting and their likes and/or dislikes. If there are enough of us maybe we could get a separate forum bundled with varmint rifles.

i have shot a number of small cal. cf's and every one of them have been fun to shoot. I have settled on the 204, it does what i need and has accounted for both wolves and coyotes. I would love to see a varmint forum on cgn!!!

I currently have a .204 cz 527 and have ordered a cooper in .204. Nice calibre that one can shoot all day. Less noisy than the 22/250 so farmers may invite you back to clean out gophers.

I got a 17 remington and a 204. I always seem to grab my 17 before my 204, guess the 17 is less common, and it is just as accurate as my 204. The only thing I dislike about them is I never have time to shoot the darn things.

I shoot 22 Hornet (Ruger), 204 (Rem 700 VSSF), 223 (CZ Kevlar) and my next aquisition will be a Cooper in 20VT. The little CF's are great fun, cheap enough to reload that I go through thousands of rounds in a typical gopher season. I have a frend that is into the 17 Khornet which is also an amazing little round, would like to build a 20 Khornet funds permitting.
Bottom line.. You can never have too many gopher guns, shoot till it's hot, grab another rifle, repeat as required..

The 20VT interests me as well. I was thinking of building one on a Savage target action with a Gaillard barrel.

I have never owned or shot a .22 Hornet but it has been interesting to me for the past 5 years. There is something about a smaller centrefire cartridge that is relatively quiet and when reloaded, powder seems to last forever that really peaks my interest.

I've got a 22-250 that I shoot two loads in, factory 45gr Winchster, and a "22 hornet simulator" load of a 45gr hornet bullet over a fairly full case of Trail Boss. I've been unlucky so far when specifically going out for coyotes with it, but it is a fun rifle to shoot, particularly with the very quiet, very mild, Trail Boss load.

Ya the Hornet is a very classy little cartridge. I wouldn't be with out at least one. The other interesting family is the Fireball which is the 221 FB, the 20 Vartarg (why they didn't just call it the 20 FB is beyond me) and the 17 FB. No serious gopher blaster should be with out something in the FB class which is why the 20VT is on my short list:p

I love my T3 1 in 8" with 60 gr BT for coyotes! But I'd sure love to find a LH 22 Hornet. With such a small powder charge it would be cheap to reload and barrels should last a very very longtime. I had a chance with to shoot an older Anschutz with set trigger once what a wonderful work of art that rifle was!

I'd love to see a small cal/gopher/coyote cartridge and rifle page on CGN!!!!

I have a 223 but I go for my 25-06 more often. With 90grain cxp1s a near miss can still kill a groundhog. The results of a direct hit are spectacular. I wood like to get a 243 or 22-250 though

Right now I am down to the following small bore CF cartridges for varmint/predators...

1) 204 Ruger
2) 223's
2) 22-250's
1) 6mm-284
1) 6.8 SPC

and I am totally interested in getting a 17 Fireball would use it almost exclusively for bobcat/lynx hunting...

:)

There is a LH .22 Hornet Browning in the EE right now.

small calibers

Be great to have a small caliber heading here on CGN.

I have been severely influenced by a friend on Montana was is a regular on Saubier.com a real fine sm caliber web site in the USA. This fellow know to many as Montdoug has all of the wildcats in 17cal,and 20 cal, stuff called Killer Bee.
Any how my collection is serving me very well. I have fallen in love with 222 especially and have in recent times picked up a Kimber of Oregon Custom Classic, a Steyr Classic Mannlicher, a HB early 70's Ithaca and a 1st year model Rem 788. These are all great shooting rifles, still working on a load that they will all shoot real well and we are close, just haven't had time to try it out in the Kimber.
Hornets, did someone say hornets?
My hornet selection includes a CZ 527 in 19 Calhoon, a barrel shortened hornet CZ 527, and a CZ in K hornet. My shortened hornet will shoot the factory Hornady 35gr into one hole at 100 yards, man finding a load equally as accurate has been tough.
My others to choose from include a CZ 223 Kevlar, CZ 223 Full Stock,cz 204 Walnut varmint, HS Precision 204 Varmint and soon a 20 Extreme. I had a CZ Fireball but I never shot it so it found a new home earlier this year.
Now is a busy time with brass prep. just did 500 in 222 then 300 in 223. My newly ordered Hornady powder dispenser will sit nicely with my heavily used Hornady case prep center ,picked up in the USA this time last year. FS

I had a very nice Sako A1 in .17Rem and then bought a Model 7 .204.I let the Sako go and use the .204 on the smaller farms around here for coyotes and marmots. When I set up in clearcuts or big farms I use a .22-250AI. Mur
