I am curious as to what you folks are shooting that has a

(1) Heavier barrel
(2) Bolt Action
(3) Easy / designed for scope

I am looking to get into a reliable, accurate bolt action scoped .22LR

Not too much to ask for is it?

:)

CZ 452 or 453 varmint or Savage with accutrigger will get you a nice gun under $500

Personally, I don't believe you need a heavy barrel with a CZ, and the American will do the trick just as well.

All of the above are designed to be scoped. The Savage will probably be easiest to fit rings to, because CZ's seem to present a challenge to fitting some brands of rings. I have an American and Leupold rings fit well. But if you want a heavy barrel, get a heavy barrel. I have both, and use the heavy more off the bench or prone, but find it too much for gophering or shooting much off hand.

Hello. There's a Winchester Wildcat HB at BASHAW SPORTS CENTRE for 289$. I think it's a nice not to common rifle. Those TOZ a quite accurate. I had one sporter barrel and it did suprise me. Cheers.

For your want list, IMO the best bang for the buck would be a Savage MKIIFV with a bull barrel and the cheapest would be the synthetic stocked model. Price goes up as you go up to a laminate stock then a laminate thumbhole.

The CZ452 Varmint is a better finished rifle (IMO it doesn't shoot better than the Savages), goes for about as much as a stainless laminate thumbhole stocked Savage MKII...$500 approx. Whichever floats your boat.

Personally, I don't really need the extra weight of a bull barrel.

I would go with a Savage in whichever stock format you want. I don't own a CZ but have heard good things about them. I do own a Savage Mark II TR and will say it is a great rifle and very accuarte. Overall just a fun rifle to shoot and I'm glad I went that route.

What do you intend to do with the rifle? (targets, hunting, plinking, etc)

Mossbrg 144 lsb....a very accurate, distance shooting rifle....With a decent scope it will shoot 200 yards comfortably. I have pushed it further and was surprised at the results. Big money or "name" does not mean a great gun.

I have both a Mossberg 144 and a Win. Wildcat and both shoot great once you find the ammo that they prefer, which is the case of all rifles. My 144 has a old Tasco 10-40x50 and the Wildcat has a Tasco 6-24x40 on it

I have a light barreled CZ 452 American, and the best I can shoot with it at 50 yards with American Eagle 38gr ammo was just over 0.5" group. With a heavy barreled Lakefield gun I can shot a 3/8" 5 shot group. Perhaps its unscientific, but that's the best of the sporting ammo I tried. I don't have to ask myself whether its worth it to carry a gun that weighs 50 percent more for that small increment in accuracy. I sold the heavy barrel gun. Make sure you get something you will enjoy doing with what you want to do. I'm not at all convinced there is an advantage in a heavy barrel in a 22 for practical shooting, but there certainly is for target shooting where every little bit counts.

The CZ is the best shooting out of the box by far unless you get a savage TR. If you are willing to spend a little extra the 453 is the ultimate of both worlds. Regular trigger for the field and a set trigger for the bench. I have both a 452 and a 453 varmint and sub 1/2" groups with SK standard plus at 50 yards are easily shoot.

As far as rings go there are many choices milet makes a nice ring, as does hawkeye (match grade air gun rings), of course CZ makes rings and BKL also makes a decent ring. The other option is to use a rail adapter and then the ring options are unlimited.

For a scope, that all depends what you want to do and how serious you are personally i have a bushnell elite 6500 2.5-16x42 and leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40 and if i was to buy another scope I would go the bushnell route. The Bushnell is defiantly more clear and has a wider ajustment range. Though a couple friends have Vortex's and they seem to be a really nice scope for the money but i don't have a ton of shooting time with the vortex.

As anyone who has shoot one will tell you, you can't go wrong with a CZ.

The CZ's are great shooters, and I'm sure that the others are as well, but the Winchester Wildcat (a TOZ 78 renamed) that Dugasgunner mentioned has to be the best value of the bunch. I got one when LeBaron's had them on sale recently, and it floored me. It shoots better than my CZ and my tricked-out HB 10/22, and for all intents and purposes, with cheap ammo, it equals my Anschutz Match 54. The trigger is better than any of the others, except the Anschutz, and it comes with 4 magazines. Grooved for easy scope mounting. After I had a chance to play with it a bit, I actually went back to get another one...sold out.

Here's a groupe I shot with my Wildcat and SK Standard Plus ammo, it gives me a little over 1/4" groupe at 50 yards

I just bought a Savage MarkII FSS. I know it does not quite fit your bill, but the thing shoots like a dream. It is more accurate then I am. The Accutrigger is awesome.

I shoot off hand, and wanted something to go Gophering with, so no Heavy Barrel for me.

As for the Heavy Barrel, it has been pointed out that you should look at what type of shooting and use you have in mind.

I have a friend with a 10/22 with a Heavy Barrel, big scope and thumb hole stock. It's an awesome thing, but you can't shoot it off hand very well because the barrel is just killer weight wise, and the scope is too much for the range we shoot at...

She needs to put a Bipod on it...

The weight of the CZ is actually why I didn't go for it...

As for the Savage, it's light, you can mount a scope on it, it's Stainless steel and real fun to shoot.

I've got a 16" barreled CZ 452 American and am quite happy with it so far. As no one has mentioned them yet, I can recommend the Talley rings, they fit my gun beautifully(look nice too).

I can say nothing but good about the CZ 452. The one I have has amazing fit and finish for the price and all of the 3 I've shot including mine are tack drivers. I lightened the trigger pull (with a cheap spring kit) and scoped it with a 3 - 9 bushnel. It shoots all ammo well but once you find one it really likes it's amazing. No big deal but my best and farthest I shot was a 200 Meter 10" target with 10 shots on a semi windy day (71 clicks on my scope) and kept 7 shots in the 3" circle and all 10 within 7". A better shooter with this gun could beat that.

If I were to start my "brand-new" 22 rifle collection all over again, the 16" CZ452 will be the first and the last rifle in that collection. It is light, handy, pretty, well fit and finished, accurate.
