Best non-res SHTF gun?

If Sh!t ever hit the fan, I would need some of the following: LOL :D :D

I've got 2-1 odds on my grampy with his cataracts, tweed pants worn uncomfortably high and bum knee carrying his rusted 30-30 and wet box of imperials against anyone with a flashlight adorned tactì"cool" shotgun at 75yds.

for me; centerfire with a pride of strippers carrying my ammo

That is some shrewd thinking Cancer.

The .22 is never in the discussions for home defence or SHTF scenarios...but cripes, a couple (or more) of rimfire hollow points hitting you in the chest at close range? Milliseconds apart? That would ruin your day. A couple in the head would put your lights out.

A garden variety chit house 10/22 with the high cap magazines would be my pick.

first would be anything in 762x39(SKS) second anything in 12g (870)ammo will be the biggest prob in my op .and who doesnt know where to beg borrow or steal either of those .

I'd consider a 3-gun combination.

A 12 gauge shotgun, preferably a Remington 870. Lots of parts available, very versatile. Accessory barrels means the same gun can switch from an 18.5" cylinder bore firing 00-buck in defensive situations to a rifled barrel with sights firing sabot slugs against game animals of all sorts to a 28" vent-rib style with chokes and some #4 or whatever for banging birds of all sorts. Hard to beat that kind of versatility. Down side - ammo is very bulky in terms of both size and weight.

A .22 rifle, preferably a semi-auto. Something effective against small game that won't require regular practice to become proficient, meaning it can be handed over to my wife or another neighbor or family member in a pinch and they will be able to deploy it effectively with only minor instruction. Down side - it's just a .22, meaning very careful shot placement in hunting situations especially if it's all you have left. Not the most effective defensive solution.

A pistol, of any sort if you DID have restricted as a choice. If you need to move locations without use of a vehicle and have a reason to carry for personal protection such as SHTF, just about any centerfire pistol will suffice. It can be easily concealed and the ammo can be carried in convenient magazines or speed loaders for fast charging. They are far more effective than a .22 in defensive situations. Down side - in a SHFT scenario it is likely that the registry would be used to confiscate all restricted/prohibited firearms at least, unless there was a complete collapse of government and social/law enforcement services. Also, not nearly as easy to use in hunting situations as a rifle or shotgun.

An Enfield is also a good choice, and I have been contemplating building a scout-like .303 on an old Parker hale should I find one. A couple 10-round mags and decent sights makes for excellent game-taking ability and extreme defensive capability. Lots of ammo kicking around in CT or wherever, and I already have a couple boxes of Federal grey-box (pretty sure the box is blue now!) set aside for practice and hunting use.

In a shtf scenario I would definately not be restricted to only one weapon. There would be tons to pick up off the streets. I would start with either my cz858 or mini14, lots of ammo for those calibers around.

The only option would be the guns you never registered because they'll take the ones you did. All you "Cold dead hands" types will comply and then spout off about it on CGN. Now quit playing with your dicks and get back to work you slaves.

CZ 527 Carbine in 7.62x39mm.

I would trade the semi-auto action of an SKS for something with decent accuracy in a second. A solid, reliable, bolt-gun with an 18.5" barrel and a decent set of iron sights. Light enough to carry around, powerful enough for hunting and defense, detachable mag, and a Mauser-style action that will last forever. If I had to choose one and only one firearm for some kind of generic SHTF/EOTWAWKI scenario, it would be something like this.

I know this is the black/green rifle section, so I would probably slap a polymer stock and some rails on her and call her done.

if the SHTF why would in matter if its non res or not? my vote would be a semi auto in 308 because it would be great for personal defence and good for hunting large game, M-14 or FAL

Choice #1: CZ858 - solid, durable, accurate (man-sized at 200m with irons from standing position) reliable and ammo available and relatively light weight. A lot of rifle in a small package that is easy to carry and deploy.

Choice #2 SA M1A - as reliable as the CZ and has better accuracy and long-range punch but heavier and ammo weighs more.

OK, I'll bite - even though these arguments are usually quite pointless. CZ858 would be hard to beat. In some situations, I like the idea of a stainless 580 series mini.
