Hey folks. I am hoping to get my first 1911 in 2011, and was hoping that you ladies and gents could provide me with some recommendations. Not looking to get the cheapest thing out there, and also not looking to get a "skies-the-limit" type gun. Quality does cost money and I am willing to spend some.

Thanks in advance!

The best examples of the 1911, IMHO, are those that do not stray too far from the original design. Springfield Armory's Milspec 1911 isn't a bad first gun, the price is reasonable, and they come with good fixed sights. Another option is to get a bare bones Norinco and have it customized to your tastes, but that takes time and maybe would be a better choice for your second gun so you have something to shoot while you wait. Give Wolverine Supplies a call.

Dan wessons will runs you several thousand dollars...I think the cheapest I have seen is about two grand plus taxes and shipping. I would also suggest not getting a norc to customize yet. Wait until you know what you want in a gun by trying several before customizing anything. I would suggest a springfield or a kimber for a first 1911. Avoid para. Norcs are good too, for the money, I just wouldn't go crazy customizing it until you know more about what you would want to truly make it "yours".

STI Spartans...either in 45ACP or 9MM would be worth a look.
Very well featured for the money...
Check out Armco's (top left of the banner dealers) website.
Might even check for any used ones...save a few more $ for ammo......

Thanks for the recommendations.

The spartans seem to be fairly inexpensive, and would be worth a look if they are a good gun. I already have a 9mm glock, so I am not looking for anything else in that calibre right now.

Thanks for the advice fellas! Keep it coming!

One of the guys at the club has a Para GI Expert, that works well.
Also have heard good things about the new Remington R1.
Both under $700.
Epps usually has them in stock.

While there are many makers of the 1911 today, Colt is the original. The quality of other manufacturers varies from excellent to passable. A modern Colt is very well made and retains a very strong re-sale value. A 1991 or Series 70 re-issue is a great stock pistol as well as a fantastic base for a custom build. This is not a criticism other manufacturers, however owning a Colt brings no regrets. Everyone is quick to praise the make of 1911 they currently own. While I have not had the opportunity to shoot or handle all the different makes of 1911s, I have been fortunate enough to fire/own a few. The few are now gone, only Colt 1911s remain. And I have no regrets.

Of the 1911's I've owned my opinion:
1- Para GI, blech
2-Colt combat Gov't, beautiful, should have never sold.
3-nork, double yuck, never again!
4-Kimber(s) right on par with Colt, great.
5-Wilson- will own soon....

i have a para ord 1911, and love it, dont have any issues with it and jams no more or less then any other 1911 i have fired, price is good if u wanna not spend a couple grand, but just my opinion

Here is a list of my 1911's listed in order. 1= most favorite
1 Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail 45 acp
2 Kimber Grand Raptor II 45 acp
3 Kimber Gold Match II .40 cal
4 Norinco custom 45 acp by Roger Kotanko, Dark International
5 Colt Gold Cup National Match series 70 45 acp
6 STI VIP double stack with Canadian 106mm bull barrel 45 acp
7 Kimber Rimfire Super .22 lr
8 1945 Remigton Rand 45 acp

The first 1911 in Canada should be STI's base on the solid warranty service. The Spartan and Toijan is good choice. Others good one is Springfield GI.
