Handgun Hunting

This is an interesting discussion that I'll make sure to follow from now. We went deer hunting in NW Ontario last week and there were so many stinking ruffies and sharptails around that it was mentioned on many occasions how we wished we had a .22 hand gun to pop the little buggers without making too much noise.

I guess this will never happen, so I'll just have to stick to Plan A and buy a sling shot.

You could look at the Hammond Game Getter (uses Remington power driver loads and lead balls sized to fit the bore), or load (you reload?) some cast lead pistol bullets over a light load , for bird use. Google for "Cat Sneeze" rounds, too.

I like my Game Getter. Can be fiddly to reload if the action is hot-n-heavy, but quiet and accurate for what it needs to do.

I'd rather be able to pack something like a small Stevens break open single shot, or a nice light semi auto for grouse use, but the cartridge adaptors or loads will do for now.

you used to be able to take your restricted firearms hunting with you but not anymore, It is the governments form of gun control with respects to handguns and under sized firearms. Thats why you can only legally discharge a restricted firearm at a range with a valid ATT. Could you imagine having to acquire an ATT ever time you wanted to change your hunting spot besides its not like you'll take down anything that you couldn't do with a shotgun or riffle.

If they ever brought handgun hunting back im pretty sure that means the gun laws took huge steps in the right direction and who knows maybe there wouldnt be any ATT  I also think Canada is at a very delicate state right now guns laws will eather become way worse or slowly go for the better.

Exactly. I really have no interest in handgun hunting myself, but I will fight to bring it back because it means a toe hold on allowing easy ATC for everyone, even when not hunting. I would love to be able to carry my Redhawk on hikes with my family instead of a short shotgun and handgun hunting is the first step towards that.

It looks interesting, but fiddly like you said. My idea is that I don't want to waste time farting about changing things, or carrying too much more weight. Best answer I can come up with now is a slingshot, or if we ever get allowed to use handguns again then a .22 loaded with shorts. I have a nice little .410, but even that is too much effort/weight just for birds when I am deer hunting. I did consider carrying it broken down in my pack, but then that is even more fiddly.

I just recieved an email back from MNR in ONT telling me that hunting with a handgun is NOT illegal in Ontario. They clearly stated that it is not illegal. Here is their reply:

Call for an ATC citing this as your reason to need one, wait until the new regs are posted for 2011 and if they give an att/atc, you are in business. If they don't you all year to fight with it until next year. Plus if you can, our alberta gov will not likely be outdone and will have to respond in kind.

Big note of caution here though, anybody doing this should take the time to get used to their gun and be extra careful not to have anything go askew. Photocopy and laminate your docs and keep your ducks in a row.

Guess Tactical 870 did not go to the lawyer?

I did speak to him however he was not as interested as I had expected. I have spoken to my local CO who agrees with my (and MNR's) interpretation of the regs. If I choose to do this it will most likely be with an antique as there is no need to get an ATT. It would be interesting to hear the CFO's reasoning if they refused to grant me an ATT though....

Hi All
I was wondering, has anyone heard of any groups lobbying for handgun hunting in Ontario?

I think your looking at it the wrong way, taking a handgun hunting is very pointless and unnecessary. What are you going to possible hunt that you couldnt use a riffle or shot gun? I personally know someone who has has been hunting even before this handgun hunting restriction came into effect and the only time he ever had to use his handgun was to finish off a wounded deer. However, i have to say that we should lobby for the ability to use our restricted firearms without having to acquire an ATT and without having to go to a range to safely discharge them

We are divided and there by easily conquerable. Point is we should be able to. Turkey is hunted in the US with hand guns from what I understand.

My 2 cents.

Cheers.

Hmmmmmm!!!!! It is not they couldn't use a shotgun or rifle, the point is they have the option to do either/or.......personally, I like more options. Go spread your limiting law abiding citizen drivel elsewhere!

That is the kind of attitude that will make it impossible to ever be able to hunt with a handgun or just carry one in the wilderness, because we choose to.

If you are going to post statements like that, you might just a well run out and join the anti gun coalitions.
