Anyone Sharpen their SKS's Bayonet? Or just take it off?

Anyone sharpen up their bayonet to a razor sharp edge? Just wondering. Don't think you could cut through butter with mine. I'm sure that's the way they were issued and then you do whatever you want. Anyone take the bayo off?

Are they meant to be dull like the non-business end of a butter knife? Because that's what it's like. Maybe it's just meant to stick someone? Point is relatively sharp, edges dull. I always thought it should be razor sharp, stick-em then slice-em like like a butcher knife.

I'm sure it's a decent reduction in weight if you take it off.

Sharp edges cut into bone and get hung up, which you don't want. Your bayonet stuck in some guy's ribcage is not conducive to taking care of his two buddies as well.

bayonets are not ment to be sharpened

Yep dull edge, if you sharpen it it will rust.

And to top it off, you don't want a sharp edge to cut yourself on your own gun.

Add to this the fact that bayonets are so useless to you that they are still legal, and you've got all the tips necessary to make your choice.

This is also a bayonet:

I took mine off, I have the SKS Tapco stock without the bayonet cut, I really won't ever be using a bayonet, and I really hate wood so why not preserve the two while getting my kicks with a now "black" looking rifle.

So I guess these are quite useless then. They look kinda cool, don't they?

No, they are quite useful for their intended purpose, which it to stick the pointy end into a body and make a nasty hole, as a last resort before you have to go at it bare handed.

i asked a lady that works in House Of Knives and she said that if make a handle for it shell sharpen the bayo but with out a handle she will not touch it so still dont know what im going to make the handle out of

I'll keep it as is for now. See how it shoots and go from there. I do like the look of the Tapco stock, especially the "SKS-D Killer" that Ki11ercane is selling for $289. Looks interesting.

Hope my new SKS is a good shooter.

SKS bayonet Don't make it sharp. Two reasons It will either cut your hand or cut your stock (in the end the stock will split

They used to be much more useful when rifles had 29" barrels and were long enough to form a decent pike when you ran out of ammo, the rifle jammed or your trench was overrun by a charge.

They didn't have semi-autos back then either, I'd take the SKS over the 29" barreled ones, especially in a tight trench , easier to maneuver IMHO.

I have a spare rod bayo for an SKS around somewhere, when you remove the bayo (unscrew the slot head screw that is staked in there 6 ways from sunday), it's in 3 pieces, a sliding sleeve, a spring, and the knife part. The knife part has a nice cylindrical section, which I would imagine would be conducive to a sleeve type handle maybe from nylon, micarta, or heck knurled aluminum even I guess. I would imagine the shaft diameter is something metric. I don't have mine handy, but I have seen the rod type SKS bayos being used for throwing knives, that is all the rod type ones would probably be useful for; either that or a homemade sai (VERBOTEN!)

I leave mine on as I think they look like death warmed over with the bayonet removed, with the lug sticking there like a useless 3rd teat on a man.
