Good Grain for .308-shooting paper???

At what distance are you going to shoot your 308 at most of the time? 100 yards or 300 to 1000 yards?

Probably the most common load will either be Sierria's 168 gr. MK on top of 40.6 grs. of IMR4064 or 44.5 grs. Varget with 175 MK or 178 gr. A-max's. Most guy's will be running on the plus+++, lol, side of these loads. These are safe starting points in "MY" rifles so start a little lower and work them up!

Most guy's are going to jump on here and post there loads, alot (target-f class) will be using 155's of some brand(either Berger or Lapua's or Sierria MK), some will be using alot heavier bullets as I'm currently running. My go to bullet of choice is the 210 Berger or the 208 A-max with a very stout load pushing them to 2600 fps.

Cheers

Are you reloading? What is the twist of your barrel?

Every rifle is unique. One load does not work for all - or any two for that matter.

Not reloading, just getting started, using factory ammo, 1:11 twist will be starting at around 200 yards and working my way up.

If your not reloading get a box of 168gr or 175gr Federal Gold medal match and try it out. Either should work good.
For regular hunting type ammo, Federals 150gr Soft point should work ok as well.

just my 2 cents :D

No need to re-invent the wheel, they've got some good info there.

What's your rifle? Heavy or sporter barrel? For accuracy, you want the best weight for your twist rate, as that will play a bigger factor than what you're shooting at.

Don't buy the cheap ammo, buy the best target ammo (Fed Gold Medal Match etc.) in the different weight ranges and see what works best. Keeping in mind to let your barrel cool properly (if it's not a heavy barrel).

If your going to paper punch a lot, consider reloading, you'll get to shoot far more for the money.

Going to be Tikka T3 Varmint .308, 24" Heavy Barrel, 1:11 twist, I know reloading would be much cheaper but to be honest I have no idea what I'm doing with stuff like that just getting started

It doesn't take too much to learn how to reload. There are tutorial sections in almost every reputable reloading manual. It is neither difficult or dangerous when done properly, and a load tuned for your rifle will outshoot even the best factory ammo. You control more variables when you reload than factory. Another option is to find a friend that reloads and have him do up some loads for you.

"...shooting paper..." Match shooting or fun shooting? Your hunting load is a good place to start for fun shooting. Practicing with it is a good thing. There are 150 grain FMJ's that aren't match bullets that will work.
For match shooting, 155 or 168 grain match bullets out to 600 yards, 175's past there. IMR4064 is your friend. Varget will do nicely, as well.
If your not reloading you'll have to try a box of as many brands as you can to find the ammo your rifle shoots best. Applies to hunting ammo too.

Fantastic choice. Go for the 175 ammo if you can. FWIW, I used 178 grain amax bullets and BL-C2 powders with my 308 Tikkas and they were tack drivers.

Reloading is FUN.... Definitely give it some thought.

Any reloading kits you can think of (everything you need to get started kind of thing ). I know most of the different tools I would need but seems a little overwhelming to be honest.
