So I'm surfing CGN in between loading batches of 44 mag this am when the phone rings. Seems a friend was having his morning coffee in Peterborough when a doe and fawn jumped his fence into his backyard. The fawn managed to escape but the doe fell trying to jump the fence and was laying on the ice unable to move. I spoke to a CO at the MNR on the way there and was advised not to kill the deer as it was likely uninjured but stressed given the situation. I'm about .5 hours away and by the time I got there (this was well into the town) an ERT officer had shot the deer with a shotgun slug. The Peterborough Humane Society was also on scene and had requested that the officer kill the deer. I was shocked that they would not attempt to assess the deer first. I was also shocked that the humane society instructed the officer to shoot the deer in the heart rather than the head. After this took place my firend asked the SPCA officer what was to be done with the deer. We were told that it would be taken away and frozen, then later "disposed of". It took a call to MNR to persuade the reluctant SPCA officer to allow us to keep the animal.

1. This animal was killed for no reason under SPCA instruction.
2. SPCA instructed the kill shot to the heart rather than head resulting in added suffering.
3. The SPCA officer (who had admitted he hunts and didn't get one this year) did not want to leave the deer with the landowner and was adamant it needed to be "disposed of".

Kinda makes you wonder.....

Who's the yuppie that called the SPCA and ERT?

When was the SPCA given the mandate over wild animals that trumps the MNR?

Land owners always get dibs on the animal unless the situation needs to be investigated in such a case the MNR would be taking the animal not the SPCA.

Sounds to me like SPCA guy wanted easy venison and now a Fawn is going to die as well. I would inspect the deer very closely while butchering it maybe even talk to the MNR about the shady SPCA guy if there are no injuries to the animal other then the slug to the heart then the SPCA guy should be charged no?.....

Bunny Hugging has no interest in "humane" or "what is right". Its all about emotions and how much cash can it bring in. These c*cksuckers get paid for everything they do, and they appeal to the mass emotions of the public to fund them. Why is anyone surprised? They have their own agenda, "what is right" is not part of it.

Neighbours called MNR. MNR just goes to a machine on the weekends which prompts you to dial police in an emergency.

MNR could not be reached. I made a call to a friend who is a CO on the way there.

Yep. Good thing I handed my cell to the SPCA guy. The landowner actually told the SPCA guy he could have the deer if he wanted the meat but there was no way in hell he'd allow them to "dispose" of it.

I ran my fingers up and down the spine of the deer. Spine was intact and the only bone damage is front right shoulder from the slug. I made the ERT officer aware that the deer would most likely have survived however he was only acting as instructed by the SPCA officer.

Unless the deer was completely immobilised shooting it in the head is not a reasonable option I have spoken with a few MNR fellows who do this sort of work and it is SOP to shoot for the lungs/heart. Shooting through the shoulder increases chances the projectile or projectiles will remain in the animal.

TurkeySlayer:

So this is based on the chance of bullet deflection off of the scull?

Buck shot is frequently used to put down animals in and around areas people frequent, funny things happen when pellets hit bone ricochets and pellets riveting can occur also pellets can exit.. Also a shotgun slug will definitely exit a deer skull especially at close range.

Something fishy goin on here!.
Hopefully that fawn will grow to be a great big old buck with huge antlers and torment the humane society guy everytime he goes hunting...:bangHead:

If the fawn was born this year it would be left behind by the mother over the winter anyway. It's chances may be poorer due to this but it is obviously living near an urban area and so it will probably fair better than if it was in the bush. The ERT could have been cutting the "fawn" 's life short if he shot it.

As far as i know the human society and the SPCA are not the same organization.
I come in contact with both organizations and it’s usually not a pretty ending. Mostly for euthanizing hit by car pets or fatally sick abandoned pets
As for deciding what to do with the deer, as far as i know it is not the officer on site who calls that shot.
He has to report in and is usually told what to do.
To shoot, yes/no, etc etc.
They usually fallow specific protocol.
They also have a disposal protocol.
Unless something makes them change it which can happen since each case is treated individually.
Good on you for making the call to the MNR and being able to get the deer, would be a shame to let it go to waste.

I thought humane society and SPCA were different as well but He showed up in a Peterborough Humane Society vehicle and was clearly wearing a uniform with SPCA printed on the jackets left breast.

Nothing wrong with a heart shot , in fact , thats how I'd do it also.
Anytime I shoot a deer while hunting , I aim for the heart...bang-flop ...dead as soon as the trigger is pulled and in most cases it hardly even twitches. Humane enough.
I dispatched a wounded doe ( once ) with a headshot using a 12ga slug...good grief , what a mess and the animal went into the funky chicken routine....heart shots for now on.

The fawn will be fine ....unless predation takes it , but thats the natural order of things.
