Anyone know where I can go to shoot 1000 yards near Edmonton or Leduc? I am currently a member at the Genese Range, but with the closure of the long range I am looking for somewhere else to shoot. Any private landowners or ranges. Any info would be great. Only shooting .308 and .284 nothing crazy like the .338 or 50 bmg

Where did you hear the long range at Gen is closed ?

The big dirt piles behind the targets are not up to standard. Genese is nothing but issues man. new members paying and not getting there memberships, Range closures for cleaning unannounced. a real pain if you drive an hour to get there. They also expect us to pay more again this year with out any idea when the long range will be open.

kind of far from leduc but you could go to whitecourt if no farmers will let u shoot on there land.

Yup, it has been a pain in the ass. Every time I drive out there the guys are talking about how many members and all the plans they have , yet nothing gets accomplished. Last I heard someone was bragging that they had 1300 members, that is 130 000 dollars per year and the range is still a dump. I have a buddy who runs a construction company and he offered to bid the work to get it up to snuff and we havent heard anything back. He figures 20-30k to get ALL the backstops fixed, but no one can make a decision. THey are going to end up losing members and then trying to get this all fixed on a reduced revenue source. Its to bad none of the board seem to know what is going on, or have any latent ability to organize anything. Just look at the ghetto gun show they put on every year. EMBARRASSING!! I would volunteer to help with this but I worry that you would get stuck dealing with all the politics and nothing would get done anyway. And I was one of the members who paid and and received a membership only to find out it wasnt registered. I had to beg and fight for about two months to get the actual card figured out.

I think our range in Mcmurray has a 1000 meter area at the rifle range, of course this isnt the best time of the year, brrrrrrr.

Have you shown up to a CHAS meeting to vent your spleen? If it's not tonight, it's next Monday at 7:30 at the Pioneer cabin on 99 St. Spruce Grove is down as well for the same reason. And if you're a little late renewing, like I was, good luck getting in. 2011 P.I.N. # only.

Were you there the day they had the surprise range clean up? kind of a rainy day?

I [now] see the closure on the website. I agree with some of the above posts - the range is a dump. Last year I showed up on the Saturday before the rifle season opener for a final go-through, and they were rebuilding the target stands from 200m to 700m. The range was packed and they shut it down, with no advance notice. I did end up volunteering instead that day, but the entire situation was a joke. Happened to me last year as well on a weekday, with no advance notice. Also, good things I shoot more prone these days, as the benches at the 200m-700m are wobbly aborations. I have renewed my 2011 membership, but this will be my last year if CHAS doesn't have things fixed up and fully operational before spring.

Well, volunteer to help with the issues. The other side of the coin is that there aren't too many civilian LR ranges in the area. So I guess help make this one better or start your own. Spruce Grove and Sherwood Park only go 300. Wildwood, Tofield, Tomahawk (is that one even still open?) are no better. I guess you could drive to GP or Ft Mac, bit longer then an hour to Genesee though. - dan

I know it isn't in AB and a trip to the range will involve a day's driving, but there is a club owned 1600yd range in Nokomis, Saskatchewan that doesn't seem to have any of the problems you've encountered. Markers for hire with notice. Heated, serviced clubhouse, up/down target frames and markers' gallery, and civil conversation. F Class welcome.

Contact the Saskatchewan Provincial Rifle Association (SPRA) through the DCRA's website. (I'd give the particulars, but names and URLs change from time to time.)

I was at spruce grove less than a week ago, its still up no problems.

The pin numbers change every year, if you membership is expired but your old pin gets you in cause you have not got around to renewing and end up having a accidental discharged injuring someone, could be a big insurance mess.
They have to cover their ass to.

fyi renew early, my 2011 membership and pin became active in November.

I think he meant they got spanked the same way. The berms need to be higher, front and sides. Depending on the distance being shot, the height and angles vary. In any case, CHAS, I'm told will not be building up the LR berms until spring. Perhaps someone on the board can correct me (I hope so). I don't know when SG will correct theirs, maybe someone from there can chime in. The rest of the ranges in AB will get this treatment as well, right now it's the ones that are closest to their office. - dan

I was told by Darren (CHAS main contact on website) that they will be completed by April 2011. Pretty much the LR berms will not be available for about 1/2 of the year/annual membership.

SPFGA has been inspected and certified to go "as is"...but, as mentioned , no provision beyond 300M. SPFGA has no "guest passes" and permits no human silhouette targets, no 408 Cheytac's or 50 BMG....but, facilities are good, target boards always in decent shape, and it is clean. Only scheduled shut-down is for Range Clean-up day which is the last Sat in May. Read the rules before you join.
