Ive been looking at this sub forum for a while trying to learn a few things:confused: but im having a hard time catching on,my dad has a old 12 gauge something or another in the shed that we found after he passed away but my mom is getting it cleaned and torn apart to make it a center peice. But from what i remembered about it i liked the way it kicked so a 12 is my center focus it allso needs to be easy to dissasemble and clean becouse i want to learn that too. cant go wrong with an 870 wing-master or tactical , should be able to find both in your price range an they are easy and reliable. you just have to choose what you want it to be able to shoot, barrels and chokes will dictate what the gun is for , not that it wont also shoot what ever its pointed at. ha ha

Yep, the Remington 870 is a pretty popular choice... lots of info available on them, lots of parts available, relatively cheap, and pretty reliable. It's up to you to decide how you want to go from there... take a look over the forums, check out some pictures, read some of the reviews/opinions on this part vs that part, and build what you want. For $500-600, you're not going to get far with only new parts, but if you're willing to wait for something to go on sale, or come up on the EE, then you might do alright.

My suggestion is to decide what you want to build this into before you start picking parts. The worst thing for your budget is to start off with one goal, and then switch to another halfway through. Seeing as this is your first firearm, and you're already in the B&G Shotgun section, finding a short barrel that accepts choke tubes might be a good way to go... you can switch between different patterns without changing barrels, and still get the short-barrel tactical look. After that, take it out to the range and start shooting... maybe you know someone who has a modified 870 that you can try out. The more variations you can try before you build your own, the more you'll know what you want, and the better purchases you can make.

I recommend that - before you buy any shotgun - you watch some video of pro shooters Tom Knapp and Tim Bradley.

If you think you may ever have an interest in hunting at all, I'd recommend the Remington 870 Express 3-barrel package from Lebaron. Under $600, comes with:
- a rifled cantilever deer barrel,
- a short barrel with fiber sights for turkey with choke
- a long waterfowl barrel with choke (which would probably work well as a trap gun)

When not hunting, I have the turkey barrel fitted with the Remington Breacher choke, and it's ready to go for 3-gun matches.

That should be all the shotgun you ever need. It's black, looks good. If you want tacticool stocks and stuff, you can always buy them and bolt them on.

What kind of cookies? :)

IF you want to duck hunt, that pretty much drops most of the tactical stuff out of the running.

thats not true my valtra pm 5 tactical takes choke tubes and has the bonuse of the 7 round detachable mag its for sale in the ee now for 675.00 just 75 bucks over your 600.00 dollar budget and as for the mag being hard to find gobbles in london ontario has quite a few spares i dont understnd all the problems people are having finding mags for these things

How many ducks have you shot with that?

What sherlock asked.

Have you actually used it to hunt anything? There are very good reasons that hunting shotguns look like they do without all the tacticool crap, and they are all related to actually using the guns for consistent and accurate shooting of game, or for the target games like skeet.

If you want to hit anything with it, rather than just make it go bang lots of times, avoid all the tactical shotguns and get a good hunting gun.

$449 for the 870 express combo with a rifled slug barrel with open sights and a waterfowl barrel... From there you can make it fit any bill tactical or whatever you like

I had this same question and went with a 870 express tact, is threaded for chokes and ghost sites and for 420$ out the door IMO the best deal!!!

well i wont bull#### i have never used this particular shotgun for hunting i bought it in hopes of using it in 3 gun shoots but my job actually dosent allow me the time so its for sale,as for your comment about a shot gun being used for hunting you need to tell that to the 60 or so grousse i shot this season with my remington tactical 870 ghost ring sites eotech red dot m4 type stock pistol grip side saddle ammo carrier extra full turkey choke installed, as for being accurate and consisten the adjustable stock allows me to adjust length of pull depending on type of cloths iam wearing (heavy jacket cold weather shorten length of pul) l the pistol grip allows me total control and very consistent shot to shot. i pull that gun up and a split second later the dot is on the birds head and its gonna die when i slap that trigger the only reeason more traditional shotguns look the way they do is to satisfy the old fudds that cant get there heads out of there ass long enough to try something new. and if you think you need the 28 inch or so barrel length to hunt ducks you need to talk to a buddy of mine ,after his shotgun broke i lent him mine to go out openning morning and guess what he owns now pretty much the same set up as i have with 18 1/2 barrel. with todays powders and new designs in shotgun shells that extra barrel length is more of a hinderence in the bush i tease my brother all the time about his weed wacker length model 1100 while he is pulling it up getting tangled in the thick bush where the best grousse hunting is iam up and got the bird down already with my oh so evil tactical shot gun. look at the burris speed bead specificly taylored to lots of traditional hunting shotguns and you might have a bit of a clue what iam talking about. may i ask have you ever tried a tactical style shotgun to do any hunting with if not take a chance and try one out you may just get hooked

none actually as i dont like the taste of duck and was taught not to kill anything unless i was going to eat it lmao good luck trying to flame my ass on here though i love a good argument

No one is trying to "flame your ass here". The OP said he wants something that he can also use for duck hunting also, then you suggested something that would be less than ideal.

where can you get an express tac for 420 out the door please let me know ill go and grab one asap i got some of that tactical junk crap laying around i will build something up cool

^ x2 Everyone on the B&G shotgun forum finds some appeal in the aesthetics of the tactical stuff, no doubt. Truth be told Skoal, I think lots (most?) of them are wall-hangers, or target guns only. I think that also explains what appears to be the high turnover, and number of new/nearly-new ones that come up for sale on the EE. If they're like me, they're bought, a few shells go down the pipe, and then the "now what?" feeling sweeps in. You can make a tactical gun a hunter, a hunter a tactical gun...but you'll save some money if you set your priorities. I don't know anyone who has ever regretted an 870 bought with hunting in mind, especially as one of these multi-barrel kits. (let's save the Wingmaster vs. Express debate for another thread)

Good luck,
Rob
