Need some advice on what rifle to get?

Savage Weather Warrior model 16FCSS 270wsm comes with a detachable magazine and Accu-stock/Accu-trigger baby!
Mine is a dream to shoot, and accurate as hell. But mine is a lefty... :)
IMHO, its twice the gun a Tikka is, and half as ugly.
I would have reccomended 7mm-08 but if .277 is your max diam. then go WSM or go home is my motto (I prefer short actions is all)

But as always, get into the store and handle a few brands/models and see which one feels right for you.

for factory loads use

or

Unless you plan to re-use that brass for re-loading, in which case stay away from the plated stuff.

^ I agree with the above poster about getting a Savage, only thing is I'd get one of the new offerings in .260rem, am I the only one who's stoked about these? If .260 is not your thing then how about a Savage American Classic in .270wsm?

Whats the thoughts on the stainless barrels? This might sound odd but I recall reading a few years ago about some of them splitting when shot out in the extreme cold? Does the blued stuff really rust that bad? I have a model 700 that is about 30 ish years old with very little to no rust on it. Is the stainless more marketing than anything? Or is it worth it? I realize some match barrels are supposively more accurate with stainless but this is just a hunting rifle so Im not sure that sort of thing matters to much.

If you already have a 45-70 and a 6mm rem. it sounds like you need something in the middle. On your budget I would say .300 win mag or .300 wby mag weatherby vangaurd, tikka t3 (very light right out of the box), or rem. sps. These are right now the best value for your dollar, and if you want a custom rifle cheap take a look at the weatherby sub MOA (there are alot of custom rifle builders in this country that do not provide the customer with a written promise of accuracy).

Always a "loaded" question, eh?

:)

My personal choice, which would work fine for your part of the world, would be the Tikka T3 Lite in .270 WSM...although the .270 Remington is a good one, too. The WSM version is just more of a good thing.

You ever decide you want to hunt moose, use a quality bullet and you're good to go.

I've some limited experience with the T3. Set up and sighted in a .300 WSM. Hunting partner has been packing it for about 3 seasons now here in the E. Kootenays of BC, and it's been flawless! Grouped under an inch right from the get-go with its very first box of Fusion ammo. Action is silky smooth and feeds WSMs slick as it possibly gets. Trigger was as perfect right out of the box as any gunsmith could have achieved.

Can't say enough good things about this rifle! No frills, just a damn good shooter that's about as light weight and sweet to carry as it one would want...all for a price that's a fraction of that charged for many rifles that one only hopes will handle and shoot as well.

There are almost endless raves about the T3 on forums like this one and 24hourcampfire...not to mention a lot of targets posted featuring ragged one hole groups!

FWIW.

Good recommendation. The 760/7600 in 270 is VERY popular in Ontario and heavy on the Fudd factor too. ;)

.

As Fuddtastic as I want my next rifle to be, I am pumped out on the slides for now, unless they are shotguns :p

Same with the semis. I want a simple bolt gun only.

Is there a preferred barrel twist and length for the .270 Win?

Not to worry about twist when buying an off the shelf rifle of calibers bigger than .223 or .243/6mm.

Rifle twist rates are pretty standard stuff for the mid range calibers, and rarely vary at all.

Fair enough ....... Why not check out the Marlin XL7 in tooseventy? The walnut job looks nice and they ARE shooters.

I can't believe that nobody is pumping the Weatherby Vanguard. Cheap and it does the trick! I have never had a problem with mine.

Also, my choice of caliber would be the .260 rem. Seems like a fantastic little cartridge for your uses.

I already have a Remington and a Marlin...

I dont have a Winchester though!
