ideal elk round

One time I shot an elk with a 338 and a 225 partition and another time I used a 7mag and a 162sst. In both cases the elk did not drop at the shot and a quick second shot put them down.

So, we can all see that you should use a gun you can shoot lots of shots really fast. ;):D

I will consider good quality bullet like Swift A-Frame or TBBC, as for caliber, anything over 6.5x55 non-magnum like .308Win, .30-06, 280Rem, .270Win is great for upto 300m

I like my .338 WM, but there are lots of other good choices. The last elk I shot was with my .270 WSM, and he went down with one shot. I think as long as you're using a good bullet, and "general use" rifle should be fine.

I'll buck the trend here and go with the 45/70 and 480gr. Wfn Gc bullets loaded to 1900fps, in a Marlin or Ruger. My shots are all within 100 yds or so, even here on the prairies.

I killed my bull elk this year with a single round from my .308 win. It travelled approximately 25 yards before falling over dead.

I use either a 35 Whelen AI or .375 Ruger, my partner a .338 WM, not so much because it is what we NEED to kill an elk, but what we PREFER when packing out in the land of the G bear.

There's no elk here in NB, so my personal experience is nil.

Having said that, I'd think a 358Norma Mag would be ideal for elk, moose or large bear. Would offer some longer range capacity with heavy bullets.

Ask him who gave him the tip on that rifle. ;)

Actually he's down in this 'neck of the woods' as we speak. During the festive season, myself and a few shooting buddies got together with him for coffee and a B.S. at 'Timmies' in Naniamo.

240gord, one of the coffee group, just called and told me Ted is on his way home tomorrow morning.

I'm still hoping to get a Schultz & Larsen in 358 NM but I don't want to part with the Husqvarna when I do. If one is good, two should be really good and besides, the Husqvarna shoots well. A quick target with 250gr Norma factory ammo, of which I lucked into seven boxes of.

I have killed a fair number of elk...15 I think...and have seen a heck of a lot more killed then that...Most of the ones I shot have been with a 308 win and 180 gr bullets...a couple with my 7 mag and 175 or 160 gr rounds, and the last 3 with my 338 win and 225 gr bullets. Of all the ones I have seen shot, most where killed with 30-06's or 7mm mags and a few with 300 win mags, along with a few other calibers in the same vain like the 270 etc. So no I am not going to say you need a cannon to kill elk...trust me I know better for a fact....But still if your looking for a dedicated elk round....I vote for a 338 mag.....The heavier bullets punch big elk bones harder and quartering shots better and in my humble opinion, knock them down faster. They also have excellent ballistics for long range shooting and less chance of blowing that bullet up on an elk that steps out 10 or 20 yards away from you.
But you have to be able to handle the recoil also because if can't shoot it right your not going to hit ####.

Elk or Moose = .300 win mag. Nice to know that you have a rifle that is capable of dropping something big from that once in a lifetime shot of 300 yards.

.308 or 30/06 will do a fine job at killing something also, but I would'nt have the same confidence in taking a longer range shot with them. Although, the odds of getting off a shot on something further than 200 yards is slim.

I know of some people who kill large game with a 243 using cheap old Winchester Super X ammunition, every year. So obviously, if you hit the bread basket, you will meat in your freezer.
