What's the best reloader for a university student on a budget? Should I go for a bench or just a small handheld model? I'm not looking to pump out huge amounts of ammo, just looking to enjoy it as a hobby and also make some usable ammo at the same time. Not making shotshells though, just 9x19mm and either .357 or .38

a lot of us get by on just a workmate and a couple of c clamps- but that allowa you to even go PROGRESSIVE if you should so choose- and if i was loading NO RIFLE, i'd definitely so choose- single stage in my opinion has NO PLACE in pistol , and even a TURRET offers an advantage
 
nope no id or pall required for buyin the kit, as its just a tool, how ever components of powder and primers you will need your pal for, bullets and brass you wont, since they are just chunks of metal in the end..

youd probably be better off to call around then to drive around... unless your looking for an excuse to go to gun shops hahah
 
With you being a student with a small budget I would check out the CGN Equipment Exchange (EE) forum for reloading components. Start out small with a single stage press, it will do what you need for now and will always be useful not matter how expansive your reloading gets in the future. With smart shopping for good quality items you can get a lot for your money.
Also, if you know of a local gun club they may have a For Sale bulletin board or know of members who may be able to help you out with both components & advise.
 
I would also suggest the Lee 50th kit as it can be had for $82. The scale and powder thrower are not the best, but they do work, and can be upgraded later if needed. Shipping isn't always as bad as it seems.

I would not recommend a hand loading press as your only press because they can be awkward to use especially as you're learning. A bench or table mount is much easier and more stable for anyone to load on.

Im new to re-loading as well and just bought the Lee 50th Kit. It seems to do the trick, but then again there are alot of plastic parts to it. As stated before the powder measure is made of mostly plastic and would probably be a good idea to upgrade.

Oh and I found instead of buying seperate shell holders for 8-10/piece, just splurge the $30-35 and get the variety pack, you wont ever need to worry about buying another one again.
 
Another inexpensive option is the RCBS Partner Press. It can be bought by itself , or as part of a starter kit for a very reasonable price. I used a Partner Press to load for several rifle cartridges before getting a larger Rockchucker. I know everyone in the reloading industry has good warranties on their products, but I have found the RCBS warranty and service response on everything with their name on it absolutely ironclad ...akin to the legendary Leupold warranty. ALL RCBS stuff seems to have a forever warranty. It's worth checking out.
 
Thanks everyone. For the next little while I'll keep my eye out for sales and for good deals at the equipment exchange. Anyone know If they will continue to sell the Lee 50th past this year? (Guess it would no longer be the 50th anniversary but I can't picture them not selling it because of this.)

i believe he was asking for information on if he needed a pal to purchase as i assume he probably doesn't and needed to know if he had to get one.
