Wow, can't believe how many people would just turn a blind eye and allow this. Between poachers and coyotes our population of deer is down from years past, the guys that just would do nothing you are lowlifes.

No one said they would allow it...we are all saying don't assume everyone is always a bad guy. Go talk to him and then IF he is poaching act accordingly.

I saw someone in camo at the range the other...I think he was going after the range ground hog! Gotta call the cops!

If he's poaching he needs to be turned in, call MNR/CO to check it out. If he's not breaking the law he has no problem. You don't however want to make yourself a target or your home a target because you confronted this person.

I heard him call for deer all fall 4-5 times a week, his stand is directly behind my property, its not his backyard. And its not one of my nieghbors, they are total non-hunters. I'm not scared to confront him, if he is there tommorow I will give him heck.

Give the guy the benefit of the doubt. Note first, chainsaw second.
You have to admit he's not much of a poacher if he is making a racket in a small chunk of woods like that.

Check the regs, here in Sask :

Hunting includes taking, wounding, killing,
chasing, pursuing, worrying, capturing,
following after or on the trail of, searching
for, shooting at, trapping, setting snares for,
stalking or lying in wait for any wildlife,
whether or not the wildlife is subsequently
captured, wounded or killed.

See what your regs are, most likely they are not within the law, make the call to the CO's.

By those rules wildlife photography is illegal if you go looking for the animals.

And laws are written as such so as to enable the enforcement officer room to decide, you may be a polite poacher or a di*k head photographer and get the same punishment. I'd also have to say in such a highly residential area there's more at fault than poaching for the dropping numbers. Numbers of tags release and quota's are decided on with a number of poached kills included. Conservation people don't assume there won't be any poacher pressure when hey release the tags or atleast I hope they don't but you never know, there seems to be a lack of intellegence going around.

So, you didn't get the advice you wanted?

Try a deer decoy and a remote caller of your own. What happens next would be a much better indicator of his intentions.

It does leave a very broad interpretation of the rules which can be very confusing and lead to situations we wouldn't think are illegal but are by their definition. technically taking photographs is hunting according to these particular regulations. In this case we could use these rules for our benefit(the guy calling) , but they could also be used against us for what would appear to be a non threatening matter to wildlife. You can almost read it that if you don't have a valid tag and in season, leave the animals alone. Not my rules, just what I get from them.

Good God, if the neighbors called the MNR every time I got on my goose call during the closed season I'd have a path worn across my yard from the visiting C.O's!! Now you got me seriously thinking of building a soundproof room in my basement, I know my gf would appreciate it too!:p

Like others have said do not assume. Get the facts straight first, if he is poaching then do what you feel is right whether that be confront him yourself or call the C.O's.

When I was growing up in the Niagara Region I was hauled into the police station continually over shooting in areas on the outskirts of city limits because someone heard shots fired or saw me in my green hunting coat and jeans(fatigues) with a machine gun( thats how one woman described my Browning A-5 with a Herters vari-choke). I never poached or shot in areas where discharge of firearms was illegal but as a teenager I at least knew enough to gather my facts regarding the laws so I could counter anything thrown at me by the boys in blue and so that I knew where and what I was legal to do! I am sure my parents got tired of going to the police station to support me and make sure the cops returned my shotgun to me. Heck the cops didnt even know what was legal and each and every time they "ASSUMED" a 17 year old could not legally own a firearm. They sure used to look disappointed whenever they found out I had an F.A.C and had bought my guns myself legally and I am sure they didnt appreciate the lecture from my folks each time about learning their jobs. My mothers favorite line to them was "never assume, you know what assume stands for? makes an ASS of U and ME!":kickInTheNuts:

its not his yard, its a mixture of river woods and a hay field, went and looked this mourning, found 2 stands with no hunter, lots of deer and human tracks, a salt lick is in a clearing in view of a stand. He must be just practicing! Its a real cold one today, we will see if I catch him.

Just because someone is calling doesn't mean they are poaching. they might be practing their calls? Why don't you go over and talk to him instead of calling him in?

DON'T ASSUME...it seems like too many people jump at the chance to play the "hero" and report and stop a possible crime. We all hate it when some soccer mom calls 911 on us cause she hears gun shots in the woods...cause you know thats were gangs have their turf wars!!!

Well said.
