Sawing off a shot gun

Completely legal boys!! Have some fun with it. Here is my Rossi 410 that was in rough shape so I cut her down and refinished wood and metal. Had a freind make this bag, which is awsome and took it moose hunting.
Threw it over the shoulder when I was on the quad or on foot, while carrying the rifle and I ended up with over a dozen birds. Still shot a Cow moose too!!!

Check your certificate....mine says 470 mm or greater...after I cut my barrel on my single shot 12 gauge to 18.25 in I called it in to be safe and was told I didnt have to call them as that is the shortest certificate they issue anyways...So I would answer no..but check your certificate

IIRC, on the certificate for a Norc Hp9 I had with 14" bbl., it said "less than 470mm"

Yes I know I have a HP-9 with 14 in barrel as well as my single I cut myself....what makes it different is that the gun came from the factory with a 14 in barrel...to cut it yourself you can only go to 18 in barrel ...>26 overall... .cert reads greater than 470 mm
We arn,t capable enough to cut it ourselves to that length:jerkit::onCrack:

I had a buddy with an old Cooey single shot 20gauge. He wanted to cut it down and balance it so his 13 year old son could better hold and shoot it. He took a couple inches off the barrel (still legal length)and an inch or so off the stock. Added a new front bead and sanded , clear coated the entire thing, added a strap and mounts and a hammer extender. Very nice to look at when he was done considering that this thing sat in a garage for 30+ years and had a light surface of rust through out.

It indeed looked very nice to look at, but having cut off the full choke ( now true cylinder) it had no range and would scatter pellets at anything past 30 feet. It was ok for shooting grouse at close range, but that was about all. I think he would have been better off to leave the gun the way it was and wait one more year until the boy was a bit bigger and could handle it better. That old 20G would have held a nice group our to 75 feet or better before it was modified.

I've had this old shotgun for a over dozen years now. It was left behind when he moved away and I've had to register it because it was in my possession. Like I say, Looks nice, but has little practical use other than a trainer for a youth or small person.

Correct, all I was noting is that they do have certificates which read "greater than 470mm" and those which read "less than 470mm".

Pretty easy and cheap to get it threaded for choke tubes if the barrel walls are thick enough.

It is not legal to cut your shotgun (or any other) barrel. Only a gunsmith can do it, and even that must only be to repair damage to the muzzle.
You can have a factory made barrel installed in that length.

Wrong! read up on in a bit guy. you can cut the barrel as long as it it 18.5 inches after alteration. over all length of firearm has to be 26 inches. who the #### ever said a gunsmith has to do it? are you only allowed to use an axe if you are a ####ing lumberjack too? :jerkit: where in the firearms act, or the criminal code does it say that you cant make an alteration to your firearm? it clearly states that you can alter it, (to specific lengths) without it changing classes. if you arnt sure of something, this is the best place ive fount for info, however, with all the uneducated comments one sees from time to time, my best advice would be before making any alteration, call the CFC to be sure. I have in the past as a newbie, and im sure many others have as well, but when there are people posting without knowing what the #### they are talking about, calling the CFC is the only way a person can cover their ass.

If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong......you don't have to be A$$holes about it. This is what I was told by a LICENCED gunsmith.

Time to get information from someone who isn't looking for just $$ from the ignorant. A LICENSED gunsmith offered to cut mine down for $100 and add a front bead sight for another $100  He also started blathering on how it was illegal for me to do it myself and to leave it too the professionals.

I did it myself of course but still would like a front bead put on it; then again if it doesn't happen not a big deal. It is a scattergun with very limited range :D

Oh you're wrong... however I don't really think that anyone was really being an azzhole about it. Trust me, when I really put some effort into it everyone in the vicinity knows that I'm being an azzhole. I just think that you're feelings are a little close to the surface. That's OK - we need sensitive people around too, just to counterbalance the Neanderthals like me that hang out here...

Have you ever been told something by a licensed mechanic that you felt after the fact may have been said to run more business thru his garage bay?? I'm going to bet that your licensed gunsmith was doing the same thing.

Please feel free to keep lipping off at me Mudgunner49.

Actually in order for it to be truly classified as "lipping off" you'd have to a) be in some sort of position of authority or seniority over me; and b) be able to do something about it. Since neither one of these are true it just goes back to me being a jackass and doesn't truly qualify as "lipping off"...:D

No hard feelings...
