How often do you lose your ammo?

Hi All

I read often that one reason for choosing a rifle in a common chambering is so that you can easily buy ammo in more remote places ie) ####'s Hardware in Nowheresville. How often do people lose/forget to bring their ammo? Is it really a consideration when choosing a rifle?

Some ammo is no longer produced. If you use a calibre that is discontinued or just unpopular, it becomes difficult & eventually, impossible to acquire. I always try to choose common calibre firearms. Also, the more common the ammo, the lower the price is.
 
I guess it doesn't happen often, but it only has to happen once and your hunt is ruined. It happened to me this year. I got home to find my wife in the driveway (she had gotten off work early due to a fire) and I was going to go out with a buddy to do an area he had hunted but was turning over to me since he was moving.
I asked her what was going on, she told me, asked me what I was doing, told her, asked if she wanted to come. She said yes. We changed, I got rifles, ammo, packs, jumped in the truck, and off we went.
Got out to the area, got out of the truck, slid the rifle from my case...wrong rifle. I didn't have the correct ammo for it. So, I wound up leaving it in the truck while she took hers and my buddy took his. Sitting on stand and this nice buck comes out about 140yds away, and she pops it. Hunt was still good, but it could have gone bad if we were further away. At camp I would have wound up cooking for a week. No one else had ammo for the rifle I took. So it is better to have a more common cartridge. Then, all you have to do is sight in with a new box of ammo.
 
I find running out of ammo is more common than losing or forgetting your ammo. Many times I see the boys determine that their rifle may be shooting a bit off and after they set up a target to confirm alignment, they are down to only a couple of rounds left.

Running to the store for another box is ok for general hunting, but its out of the question for the long range shooters. I bring several boxes with me regardless of caliber. Try buying some soft points for your Mosin in Nothingville.
 
Well seeing as I'm not retarded I never forget my ammo.

How the hell can anyone forget their ammo on a hunting trip?

Do people forget to bring their truck as well?:p
 
"...really a consideration..." You'll think it is if you ever go hunting, fly to get there, only to find the airline has lost your ammo.
"...I never forget my ammo..." You will eventually.
"...and she pops it..." And then refused to let you use her rifle after her hunt was over?
 
If you are traveling by air to your hunting location, consider how often bags are misplaced by the airlines? Thats how often it happens. So you've landed in Schefferville on the way to your caribou hunt of a lifetime when you discover the bag with your 6.5-284 handloads didn't make it. Good luck with that.
 
I've flown a couple of times withing Canada on hunting trips.

I sent my ammo down well in advance of the actual hunt. Problem solved.

Not a whole lot of 250 Ackley kicking around in the local gun shops.:D
 
The only time I've lost ammo was last fall when a .270 cartridge escaped my jacket pocket while I was forking hay to one of the studs.
I'm with Pickles on forgetting ammo.
If you are off on a hunt that is longer than 1 day you'd best have a check list made up and followed...jmo
 
x2 on using vs losing. I was having trouble with my .308 2 years ago during deer season. ended up shooting off two boxes while trying to zero the scope. Found the problem to be an issue within the scope itself. a buddy had a spare scope, swapped them out, went to a local gas station picked up a box, 5 shots to dial it in and the only thing lost was a 1/2 day of hunting on a week long trip.

I believe there are a couple of threads here on CGN in the past few months about people forgetting things when they go to the range. Now until last fall, I had never forgotten, or brought wrong, ammo to a hunt.
I don't forget rounds or staples, or targets, or even the gun when I go to the range, but I didn't call anyone retarded when they posted that they had forgotten something.
I hope that you continue in joy of your absolute certainty. I, however, will continue to allow for the human failings that we mere mortals have to contend with.

In Pickles' world, I am severely retarded.

I have driven 1 1/2 hours in the dark through snow storms that have closed major highways, only to find that my rifle (or bow) is still sitting in my front hall. I have gone to the range to run some reload tests and forgotten almost everything one needs at one time or another, including: rifle, reloads, magazine, stapler, targets, push pins, binos, spotting scope, tripod, sandbags, rifle rest, trigger lock key for my handgun, key for my handgun case, etc.

At least my retardation does not cause me to come across as an ignorant a-hole (or maybe I am too stupid to notice?). I must be one of them "retarded savants" then, cause I finished college with 3.95 and university with 3.87 GPAs.

If I want my gun to go bang, which is the reasoning behind going to the range
or hunting, why would I forget to bring my ammo?:confused:

Range boxes are wonderful things.:D

I don't forget to wipe my ass after a poop either. :p

I guess proper planning is just one of those little things I do to make my life easier.

But hey, to each their own.;)

You can open most trigger lock with a paper clip (not by trying to pick the lock, but under it, there is a small lever you can push to unlock it, next to the big screw)
Take less than 5 min to find the correct shape for the paper clip to push the lever.

I don't believe that my reading skills are lacking, I believe that they are just fine. Perhaps it is simply your inference that "Since I am not retarded, I never forget my ammo". There are 2 logic statements, which, when combined with the conjunctive comma, deliver a finite conclusion.
1. You are not retarded.
2. you never forget your ammo.
For the sake of argument, I can accept that and I will. Therefore you are not retarded and you do not forget your ammo. However, if you did forget your ammo, that would make you retarded. Extrapolating this further is the generalization implied by your statement that anyone forgetting their ammo must be retarded. This inference is further re-enforced by your next two statements of "how the hell could anyone forget their ammo?" and "Would they forget their truck?"
Allowing as there was no dis-associative verbiage between your first statement and the next two, there is no way for the reader to ascertain that the subjective "you" used when applying the first statement pertaining to yourself in a indiscriminate manner, is not directly applied to the subsequent amplifying statements.
That being the case, a logical derivation of the three statements is that anyone forgetting their ammo, or truck, would have to be retarded. If this was not the intention of your post, perhaps you should have reviewed the composition of your submission and edited it accordingly. Thanks for playing.;)
