I have the opportunity to buy one of these, brand unknown so far but I will find out as soon as I get a look at it. wondering what price range for a good+ overall condition. I know brand will be a factor but rough estimates would be great. From what research I have managed I notice they aren't too common which is what i like. I will post up a pic once I have it.

thanks for your help

if it's a Remington 788 grab it........but, like the previous poster said, it's probably a Savage 340...or a Stevens 325...or a rebranded Savage 340...the CIL Model 830...

they are quite common in the Savage/Stevens...I've had three or four go thru my hands.

sweet well I'm for sure getting it for cheaper than that. so thats good. will post pics once I get it

Rem 788! I found one here on the EE a ways back, but I was using the Kidney that the guy wanted for it. Always on the look out for that particular rifle.

Hakx

I am doing work for the guy who owns it currently, and he has no use for it. I might even be able to swing it for a days wage barter, cut out the tax man altogether. even better would be a days wage of driving his excavator... heh heh.

We sold our CIL for either 250 or 300, we can't remember which (been a couple yrs); it had side mount, a good 4X scope, a leather comb riser and was in really nice shape.
A really nice, short, light gun, and was very accurate to boot. While they aren't that popular I personally think they're a good lower priced option.

Where you are matters.
"...they aren't too common..." They aren't any more. Bolt action .30-30's can be astoundlingly accurate. Far moreso than any lever action. No pointy bullet issues either. Epp's is listing a 340, in good condition, at $329.
Been kicking myself for 30 some years for not buying the Savage 340 I saw, long ago, in a Sears warehouse store.

cool im fairly sure its going to be like 150 or less, I will find out soon hopefully thanks for all the info

My cousin has a 340 savage in 30-30 with a 4x scope on it and it always does 1.25" @ 100 yards with factory ammo, drives me nuts.

A friend of mine had one given to him and then after hating the factory irons ended up putting $200 into have a smith put a mount and scope on it and it wanders badly. 5 shots ends up around 4" @ 100yards.

I don't think they're work $250 when you can buy a Stevens 200 with mounts for about $370 in a variety of calibers.

Try to get it for a days work and post some pictures when you get it.

Is it the 788 in 30-30 that's desireable; or just the 788 model in general?

Finding a 30-30 bolt gun (other than the Savage or a rebranded cousin) is a rare find, as they are traditionally a lever round.

The 788's were Remington's value shooter.....and what shooter. Okay stock, top mounting scopes, better trigger. The bolt locking mechanism was unconventional, but overall it had all the bolt gun features you're used to.

I do have two kidneys though.:) Hmmmmmm
