I've pretty much decided to buy a mini-14.. likely stainless in synthetic stock
Before I do, I know a lot of guys here have norinco M14s..
is it worth paying more than twice as much for the ruger?
or is this apples and oranges

hope this isn't d:h: too badly, i searched for a while for similar thread

um, lots of people hate the mini. Apparently the new 580's are decent. I bought the poly' first. I recently found a custom mini on the EE and picked it up. So far so good. It is kinda like apples and oranges. Different rounds, same basic action. more or less. What are you looking to do with it? I got the mini so I can pratice with the same platform, but with cheeper ammo

The rifle would be for target shooting (inside 200 or so), minor hunting, something to keep in the truck (non-res), i like the 5.56 rnd as it's cleaner I understand

ya, guess i forgot to mention that. I run the ruger cuz .223 is cheeper to burn up then 308, but its the same basic platform. What do you actualy plan to hunt with it?...and i would not but a new one btw, WAY over priced. Check the EE

You've lost me. You're considering a Mini-14 in .223 and a Chinese M14 in .308 at the same time.

That is apples and oranges.
Yes, that's about right.. I like the M1 action and i know the two rifles have that in common for the most part, I like the look of them.
I am aware there's a big difference in calibers, but i'm open to trying something new, as I've never owned a rifle in either

The new mini's are sapposed to be decent in accuracy , I have owned 3 of the older models and I was satisfied with them. They had a bad name because of the accuracy of them , but the new ones are sapposed to be alot better . the .223 is cheaper to shoot than the 308 , I had a nork m305 as well , but just dident shoot it enough and ammo is not as cheap and a vegas trip came along so I sold it for funds to get there ;). I will buy a 580 mini one day no doubt , they are a fun gun and cheap to shoot . will by a nork again as well ...................

if you like the style of action, dont mind paying for 308s,dont mind spending a 1000(since you are considering a mini), ..... get a M1 garand! best of both worlds. better build quality than norc m14, wouldnt deprecate like mini 14s, 30-06 are about the same price as 308s in box of 20.

jk. well i would put my money on mini. those nocincos does not worth the money IMO, you need to spend extra to get them run and feel right. there is reason why mini or Springfield M1a cost as much as they do. these type of actions are not cheap to produce. in the end, you get what you pay for.

Whoever told you you have to put money into the norinco m14's , especially the new ones are full of #### .. I bought mine 6 months ago and havnt bought anything or changed anything except for a rail and spring kit and it shoots great , about 2 inchs @ 100. Havnt had a single issue including shooting up to 180 grain ammo , and knock on wood nothing has happened . So have many other people .

Just because its norinco doesnt mean its junk , as im sure many other owners would say the same thing .

I have a stainless synthetic 580 series mini 14. Shoots easily into 2" all day and with good 69 grain match handloads will do better. Great gun. Love the stainless thing for calling coyotes. Tough as nails. I have owned 6 mini 14's over the years and two mini 30's and I have never seen one jam. The older ones' accuracy was hit and miss and I sold each one. I now wish I could have everyone of them back. The Har-Bar barrel stabilizer is supposed to be a great fix.
