I've switched my diet. I was deep frying the wee furry bastards and I got concerned about my cholesterol levels.

I switched to a much healthier regimen and an animal I like a lot better.

I got a new cook book and now I stir fry. 25 ways to WOK YOUR DOG.:D

When I used to live out at the farm when growing up there was always some feral cat hanging around. The best gun I found was a fast moving 22 cal bullet type of gun. Example, a 223 rem or a 22 hornet. 22 mag was ok but cats are kind of tough and I don't like seeing an animal suffer. 22lr is not good in my opinion, unless you can make a tough brain shot and some feral cats don't let you get too close.
 
Yes, cats are tough critters and can carry a lot of lead. I would use .22mag as a minimum, and prefer a scoped .44mag carbine. It's easy to hit with up to about 100 yards and kills instantly, and probably gives a little more margin for error.

TransAm, I'm curious...what will you do with them once you trap them? If shooting them is unpalatable, any other alternative will be more so.

And I'm not afraid to say it. Feral cats have no business on my property. They are not part of the natural setting, and kill far too many animals that are. If I have too many mice, the hawks, owls, coyotes, foxes, and falcons will see to them. I've killed many a cat both in the city and in the country, and have smiled everytime. It takes a long time for the birds to come back, but when they do I smile again. For the kitty lovers who find it deplorable, I say pull your heads out of your asses and keep your damn cats at home. To answer the question of best calibre for a kitty, I like 17HMR... and a pitchfork for real close up work.

And to the comment that a dead cat works as coyote bait... in my experience absolutely NOTHING will eat a dead cat. Not even magpies or crows and they love garbage. Even the maggots won't strip one right down.

I was planning on dropping them off at the humaine society.. $10 a head they told me.

Really, I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but...are they paying you or are you paying them?

If they're charging you $10 so that they can snuff these un-adoptable cats, I must wonder why you would pay? A careful shot is virtually free by comparison, and is more humane. Catching a wild animal in a live trap, then toting it in to the H.S. must be a horror show to the critter. If you are truly considerate of it, then shooting it is the obvious answer.

If they're paying you, then I need to know if it's a dead-or-alive deal.:)

Canuckgunny, you're blunt, but you're right. However, I disagree with the coyote bait comment...I find they work great. They also disappear quickly from my vulture feeder: a 4x4 foot piece of plywood mounted horizontally on top of a pole out in a field...but if the H.S. is paying a bounty on'em, the vulture feeding ends now!

The drop offs don't last long around my place. Between the coyotes and the highway most of them are dead within hours. I also have a 5 foot wire mesh fence which discourages them from coming in the yard but if they do the 3 terriers and 50 attack ducks make short work of them. Never had to actually shoot one.;)

I wish they paid $10 a head! I would have to pay them.. I'm strongly considering purchasing a .22 soon though, It would sure be nice to pick off all of these rabbits running around here too..
 
Well, the animals around here must be picky, cuz I've left cats layin around for weeks in the open and nothing. Leave anything else and its goners asap. Maybe they're extra stinky cats that used to infest this place.
After writing what I did I knew certain people would react a certain way, whether they said anything or not, and thought about adding an addendum of sorts.... I know kitty's are special to them for whatever reason and I'm sure they can't help their reaction.
For the record, I don't kill every cat I see. If I'm at someones' home and the cat happens to jump on me I'd be more likely to pet it than strangle it. If it's in their home its not here causing damage to the critters who really belong. Feral cats are a purely man made problem. To me it is not 'natural' that they stalk the backyards of every property in town killing robins or whatever they can get their paws on. There is no natural habitat for them and they simply don't belong. Especially unchecked out in the wild/country. When I'm out visiting and someone's cat hops on my lap and they come running to the rescue, grab kitty and throw it on the ground because they know how strict I am about my stance on ferals... I find it hilarious. Firstly because telling the cat I'm a kitty hater and that its not a good idea to be near me probably isn't really even true, but secondly, the cat really isn't going to understand the lecture anyways.
I'm sure an FBI profiler would automatically mark me down as a potential serial killer because of my opinion. I guess it's a good thing I don't wet the bed. Whenever 'killing' is brought up by cat lovers I'm always absolutely amazed at how eager they are to ignore the murder their cats commit. 'That's natural though'... No it ####ing isn't.
 
Its too bad that there isn't a requirement that all city cats be license and chipped, then if one shows up in the country the registered owner gets a fine and has to reimburse the property owner who did what they failed to do.

I hate to say it, but city folk are probably more responsible than a lot of country bumpkins who let the damn things breed like rats in half the barns you see. You can't regulate stupid.
