For those of you out there who have installed aftermarket sks muzzle breaks on your can you tell me what kind you have and do you think it actually reduced recoil and improve accuracy?

I have this one. It helps with muzzle rise. Maybe a little on the recoil too. It makes the gun loud as hell.
It also makes the bayonet really dead weight.

Outside of a frail ten year old girl just starting out shooting, why would anyone put a muzzle brake on an SKS?? It's a reasonably hefty semi-auto firing a wimpy cartridge!
Now I've shot a couple of decent groups with .416 Rigby at the range before, and that's got a bit of kick, enough to possibly justify a muzzle break, but a 7.62X39? My 7 year old shot my SKS with Dad right there, of course, and said,"Dad, this has a bit more kick than my .17HMR!" :) Any adult that thinks an SKS has any recoil to speak of should take up knitting instead, lol!

I'm thinking he's looking more towards the improved accuracy claimed by muzzlebrakes as opposed to the recoil reduction.

LMAO. #######-ish but true.

BUT, it makes the rifle look cooler. And that matters.

Tell that to NEA, DLASK, and Neit. Nothing *needs* a muzzle brake, some people just want one. With less muzzle flip you can get back on target much faster which will help speed up accurate rapid fire. It doesnt mean your a wimpy #####. One could argue that these rifles dont *need* a single modification, but we all know how much fun it can be to customize guns to make them perform and look better.

Sardaukar, I was smiling when I wrote that, and I'm a good natured guy and all, but it is true, lol. If my 50 lb. 7 year old tells me it's got a bit more kick than his .17HMR, but then happily shoots off the rest of the magazine, I'm thinking really, someone's talking about muzzle braking an SKS? :) Adam134, a muzzle brake is a device that uses gasses coming out of your muzzle to reduce recoil via the ports drilled in the device. Muzzle brakes do nothing to improve accuracy, and the SKS will never shoot .70 MOA like my Sako Grey Wolf 30.06. It is a fun gun, a pleasure to shoot, and I could bang away all day with it since it has no appreciable recoil. Reminds me of this article in Field and Stream some months back, that mentioned these New Yorkers that had muzzle brakes installed on their new Remington 700 hunting rifles, all chambered in .270 Win! David Petzal, their rifles editor, wrote that if they thought .270s had too much recoil that they should take up macrame or pottery instead! :)
Supernova, I'm thinking that if you ever shot a .577 T-rex you might change your mind on that statement that no gun needs a muzzle brake...:)

Lol, let's assume OP is more interested in the compensator side of things.

break, brake, compensator, potato...

:D

I'm going to put a brake on mine and I'll get back to you with before and after range results. the SKS doesn't have much straight back recoil. but it does have lots of muzzle jump. I'm going to try one and see if it helps my accuracy. After shooting 150 rounds , the jump was starting to irritate me. It would be much more pleasant to shoot if it was more like an SVT-40 (which has a factory built brake. duh.)

Add 50 lbs to that t rex and I bet your 7 year old could handle it. the need there is recoil reduction and is achievable many ways. My father had his friend make a nice little recoil reducer for the stock on his Superposed to reduce the strain from high volume trap shooting. Not a need but its nice to have so why not? Chumlee is bang on, muzzle flip is pretty substantial with the SKS, and that was the point to my last post. Putting 5 rounds in a tight group is not doable at high speed, a brake and especially a compensator will help. And as to inherent accuracy, the muzzle device becomes your barrel's crown. Changing devices can change groupings and POI. Ive got the nc star AK-74 style brake on order for my plinking SKS and have their slotted brake on my SKS-D. The slotted brake is so-so. Not alot of effect or noise. It'll be getting an AK M14X1LH thread and a cool Romanian AIMR conical flash hider from cnc warrior. If I really wanted a good brake Id go M14X1R and use an 858 compensator or brake.

i dont see why anyone would consider putting a muzzle brake on a rifle a pansy thing to do? it only makes sense, muzzle brakes are fairly inexpensive and do their job. if i said for 19.99 i can make your car drive smoother and handle better you would be an idiot not to, or are you too much of a "man" to live comfortably.
just my .02

I just remember reading on muzzlejet's website that their brake is claimed to tighten groupings so I assumed brake's were for more than just the recoil.. Now I feel like a bit of an idiot lol. Thanks for the heads up.

The bayonet standard/front sight assembly is cylindrical behind the sight? Why not have a split ring made up to fit around this part. It would increase the weight near the muzzle and possibly might decrease barrel whip leading to possibly decreased group sizes. It would also not look as stupid without the bayonet mounted on there.

Jmax857, If your $20 fix to my car to make it drive more smoothly also included ripping off the muffler so it was as loud as Hell I'd tell you to get stuffed! That's my biggest
problem with muzzle brakes, the damned noise they make, and why I wouldn't put one
on any rifle I owned short of an elephant rifle! Sure, if all you ever do with a rifle is shoot targets whilst wearing big ear muffs, on the outskirts of your city, fine, but I like to be able to use a rifle for hunting, etc, without having to remember to bring sound protection.

I have too many hunting guns not to experiment and play with the cheap ones. The SKS is pretty wimpy compared to an 06 so mine wont be used for much hunting. You should be wearing hearing protection anyways, permanent hearing loss is not fun. If you dont like brakes thats fine, but dont disrespect someone who does.

Lol, don't take everything in this thread too seriously. It took a turn for the silly quite fast.
