Hey guys, just got back from the range, still new to reloading. I loaded up 50 9mm rounds (124grn with 3.7grn of titegroup). A few of them stovepiped this time, i've never had that in my M&P 9 Pro. Is there something that i might have done wrong this time during the reloading process? What causes stovepiping?
 
from the hodgdon website, looks like you are to low on your powder ,were you lead or plated/jacketed?

I have it on good authority that stovepipes can be caused by insufficient crimp.

First, I don't know many people who crimp 9mm. Second, I'd like to know how a crimp could have any impact on a phenomenon that happens during the ejection process, when the bullet is already long gone. I'm not trying to tell you off. I've never heard of this, but if insufficient crimp is known to cause stovepiping I'd sincerely like to know how.

xman, like BCboy said, most likely a bad recoil spring/load power combination. Installing a lighter spring (if you absolutely want to shoot that light load) or increasing powder charge should fix your problem.

FYI stovepiping can also be caused by extractor/ejector problems or limp-wristing.
 
i think i will just go up to 3.9grns or so, i don't want to change out any parts on the gun. I just wanted to start building my loads light and work up from there. 48 were fine, just 2 piped but would like to shoot at 100%.
 
"...have it on good authority that..." Your 'good authority' doesn't know what he's talking about. Stovepiping is a feeding or ejection issue that has nothing to do with crimping.
"...just 2 piped..." How did you weigh the powder? Those 2 might have had a bit less powder than the rest.
"...will just go up to 3.9grns..." You need to work up the load using data from a manual, not just pick one and hope. Plated bullets use cast bullet data. Hodgdon's 125 grain data will do.
 
the Hodgdon's website says 3.6grn to 4grn, that is why i picked 3.7.

for weighing the powder, a seated a primer into the case, then zeroed the scale with that case, dumped the powder from my LNL AP, then weighed it again, and it came to 3.7grn.
 
My experience with plated Berry bullets indicates that they have slightly less friction than lead. The theory is that if the projectile leaves more quickly and that back pressure is diminished causing the stovepipe. Reloading .38 sp for a S&W 52 , I increased the load over the lead optimum and the problem went away.
 
thats how most people i know with progressives weigh there pistol charges. i use berry's with 4.1 grns of titegroup and works excellent for me. i was also told to follow jacketed info for the berry's but some are saying follow the lead info so maybe my load is wrong but i haven't had a problem
 
ya, i figured it was the easiest way to weight in the cartridge. if not, i would have to pour it back into the powder measure and mess around a bit. what's the difference if i zero out the scale with the little scoop on it or zero it out with the actual cartridge on it. It basically just made it so i wasn't pouring powder around. Going to ToysRus with the kids, then going to make some more rounds around 3.9grns..

I don't know anyone who doesn't crimp 9mm.

If you bell the case enough to put a bullet into it you have to crimp it to allow it to feed.

It is not whether or not you crimp 9mm it is how much you crimp it.

I take the bell out and then a little extra. Smooths out any issues with feeding and interfering with smooth extraction that I have encountered in the past.

Lee Factory Crimp Die is very popular with most of the 9mm shooters I know.
