T3 Aluminum Bolt Shroud

Mine has enough play that if I wave the uninstalled bolt around in my hand it will rattle. When it is installed, however, handling the rifle the way one normally handles a rifle (as opposed to waving it around like a maniac ;) ) rarely causes it to rattle.

I would still like to improve on that. The solution that makes the most sense in my head would be a small light coil spring to hold just enough longitudinal tension on the part that it won't shift about so freely. I still haven't found one that can collapse far enough to install, yet still maintains tension with the firing pin down, so perhaps it's not a practical solution...

And right after posting that, I think I may have found the solution to the "can't collapse far enough" problem: conical springs. As the coil collapses, the wraps sit inside each other, such that the minimum collapsed length is simply the diameter of the wire... Now do I buy or build? I somehow doubt that I'll stumble across something suitable as a stock item... :p

Still waiting for my new one, but my old one fits nice and tight, no rattle at all. If the new one fits as well as the old, then I don't expect that to change.

What is it in the bolt that is rattling exactly? Where do you intend on installing this spring?

P.S. Canadian Tactical is a Canadian retailer who carries the HSS line of after market parts. They want 65 dollars for the bolt shroud, and 110 for the oversized bolt knob and handle. Unfortunately they only take VISA and (FRAUD ALERT) as payment.

Flick, You've already nailed the bolt shroud. Do you think you would be able to do the bolt knob? I know I already mentioned the oversized bolt knob, but it would probably be the best thing ever if you wanted to tackle that one as well. I just wanted to reiterate my enthusiasm.

The spring would go down the hole in the bolt shroud before installation, and would be squeezed between the bottom of the hole and the back of the firing pin once installed.

The plastic used in the factory shroud flexes easily, and can be manufactured to an interference fit that squeezes the bolt slightly once installed. This fit guarantees that the shroud won't shift around once installed, but may also be part of the reason we see so many of them crack around the slot. Naturally, when making the shrouds from a much stiffer material I had no choice but to leave a reasonable clearance that could account for manufacturing tolerances in the mating part.

Personally, I find the noise made by the shroud once installed to be less than the slight clinking generated by my sling swivels, but I'm a hunter so I can understand the desire to move that level of noise as close to zero as possible.

As far as my next project goes - more bolt shrouds! :p I have only 1 T3 shroud left in silver so it's time to crank out more.

Seriously though, I'm already dabbling with both the bolt handle and bottom metal... might be time to start a new thread :D

Flick As per our conversation. I put a spring in the bolt shroud , from a ballpoint pen. It tightened it up considerably. No more rattle. Thanks for the idea. I have yet to fire the rifle , if there is a change will let you know.

Thanks Again

Turns out that I'm buying one of Flicks Aluminum shrouds from another member that has previously bought 2...Cant hardly wait to get it and see how it looks!!
Hawooooooooooooo:sniper:

I put the spring from a pen. In the back end of the shroud and then slide the bolt back into the shroud compressing the spring.

I bought a black one from Flick last week for the wife's T3. She is getting impatient waiting for it to come in! I'm curious if anyone has made the photo of the pen spring insert that you are talking about yet? I can probably figure it out when I get it...but never hurts to get as much info as possible before messing something up!
