Borden - CQB 4 16 2011

Even with all the rain it was a lot of fun. A big thanks to Tim and Barney for another well run match, as well to Plink for taking care of the stats for us.

With the proper rain gear the weather was almost bearable. Took Plink's advice and dressed for the conditions.

shooting in gale force winds and driving rain.. what else could possibly go wrong?

getting your car searched by MP on the way out of the base..

just a reminder to make sure your paperwork is always in order..

MP was a nice kid.. we tried to recruit him into shooting with us next time.

still beats spending the day inside, sitting on the couch.

And make sure your cases are locked...they actually checked all of ours for locks...

That is the first time I have ever been pulled over and asked to look at my guns!

Kind of scary as one mistake could cause a horrible chain reaction. Court case, lawyers fees, guns take away! Sheesh! Don't even want to think of it.

Glad we had everything in order! He even asked for my ATT which he called ATI. LOL Glad I had that in my pocket as well!

Nice reminder guys. At the end of the day one can be pretty fried. Too easy to make mistakes when it comes to locks and stuff. Always good to stop and double check everything is correct.

And don't forget to always have your firearms certs and applicable permits with you whenever you travel with a firearm of any kind. It is the law, like it or not.

Thanks to Tim and Barney for a great shoot... again.

And a special thanks to the young fellow with the cleaning kit that helped get my rifle running again.

That would be "D" (yes, that is his CGN handle) here on CGNutz.... He's a great asset to our community! ;)

Glad to be warm and dry tonight.

Cheers,
barney

HMMM those scores........Like GSP said to Matt Hughes, "I'm not impwessed with your perfwormanceee" (french accent insert)

Jokes :p but at least you guys can blame it on the rain :stirthepot2:

The scoring was pretty low yesterday to be sure. First shoot of the season, 50km winds buffeting you around... unless you stuck your ass out..... WAY out.... rain, cold enough that I was having a hard time finding my mag release and ended up hitting my bolt release by accident, slow mag changes etc.. moisture on the optics..

Bolivar, yesterday was one of those days when the lit reticle came in handy. It was so dark at times, and my glass was so wet with rain, the only way I could see where my post was in my optic was with the light on in the center. Was nice to have.

Well, I guess that's why it's called "service conditions".... :)

As usual, good bunch of guys to shoot with, and look forward to the rest of the season!

As usual, thanks to Tim and Barney for a well run show!

And it turns out yesterday was the better day weather wise. My "home" club had a shoot today and the blizzard like conditions completely obscured the targets at 100 yard. Spring my a$$.

I am right glad I was not out in the middle of a range today.

Looking forward to CQB 2 though. Ordering sunshine a moderate temps as we speak.

Nice Video man :) I will give you guys a little bit of advice.

When you transition to your pistol take your time and get the 2 head shots out of the way first. You will now have 1 round left in your pistol, do a tactical reload (now 4 rounds in pistol) hose them off, two shots on each body.

OR...if you want to play a little safer, take 2 shots on the first head, tactical reload (4 rounds in pistol) take 2 shots on the other head. Hose off the last 2 rounds, 1 on each body. You may lose out on 10 points, but at least you will have a better chance of 1 head shot on each so you can score. I used this strategy in the finals last year with great results and less risk :p

The choice really depends on how comfortable you are with your pistol :D

As much as I appreciate you giving us advice, with this approach you are essentially gaming the match.

When the RSO gives us the course of the fire, he says two shots to the body, one to the head. This is based on the Mozambique Drill which requires that two shots are first fired at the torso and then a third at the head.

In NSCC Match 23 – Body Armour Drill, which is also based on the Mozambique, the rule book states:

Excess hits in either scoring areas are dealt with by removing
(patching out) a hit of the highest value for each excess hit until
there are the correct number of hits. The target is then scored in a
normal manner.

So, if you fire more than one shot at the head and end up with a 5 and a 4, only the four will count for score.

The big difference with the NSCC match is that the left and right targets are separate exposures, so you don't have the option of shooting between targets.

Doing a tactical reload as opposed to running dry on the first 3 round mag does save you time, but everyone that I've seen shoot this match usually runs the first mag dry, which typically takes longer than leaving a round in the chamber.

You may end up with a higher score, but it's nice to be able to keep with the spirit of the drill as opposed to just winning the match.

Unless the match organizers prohibit Pobcats approach, there is nothing wrong with it. The match is a game, so "Gaming the Match" is part of it. It is a competition, not a training drill.

In really life, two hits to the body do count, regardless of head hits. So from that perspective the match condition is false. But that is the rule and we play by it happily.

Personally, I will be doing a variation on what Pobcat suggested. I will shoot head shots first, and continue to fire head shots until I get one to score, then I will switch to the body. I am not interested to two head shots on one target. One to get in the rings is fine, so I can proceed to score with (hopefully) two more shots to the body. But without the head shots, no pistol shots score so the head shot is the most important.

Actually TimK suggested this at the clinic. I felt kind of dumb for not thinking of it myself.

Now the next trick is to practice with the pistol so that I can hit the damn head and body :D

Helmet cam video :)

Great work on the video. What type/model of camera are you using?

If I dare make a suggestion, I think it might provide a better FOV if it were attached to the left side of your head, assuming it is on the right hand side here.

Again, just a thought, your video rocks!

Thanks! Next one will be better. The camera was actually zip tied to the top of my hearing protection! We forgot the head band it's supposed to attach to...that's why it's all lopsided :)

I'll be doing more from a whole bunch of angles this season so stay tuned!

This was also my first foray into video editing so sorry if it seems a bit cheesy :)

The camera is a GoPro HD Hero.
