deer ticks!

Princess Auto sells it , it's called "Horse Guard " Spray the clothing , socks boots etc...... very well and let dry , after that it pretty much stays in the clothing for around 3-4 washes , cost is around 10 $ for a litre of the stuff ! I've been buying it here in MB for the out of control tick season we have here , My buddy and I went fishing , and he walked off the trail to put our chain of fish into the water , walked back and literally had THOUSANDS on him , I had NONE ! it works ! I won't be caught in the bush without it ! And ! it's cheap,, what else can I say ? You can also buy it at most Tack shops across canada :)Forgot to mention , is also good against black flies , and the stuff kills ticks and blackflies on contact !

There is a repellant used for horses that is supposed to work really well, and not wash out of clothing??? I'd love to get that stuff. Anyone have a name/source?

How's it smell ??

It doesn't , I just don't put it directly on my skin ..... lots of Pyrethrins" other than that I douse everything with it , and put lots of bug juice (made for people) on any exposed areas , they just don't bother with you then , and as stated , they die on contact ! I love the stuff :) Ticks creep me out, so this has become my best bud in tick season :)

We have seen quite a few deer ticks in recent years at my farm in southern manitoba. They are definitely getting worse. A good grass fire keeps them at bay for a while.

Its becoming a real problem over here with the explosion in deer population we have seen. The sheep and deer here seem to have the same tick and they love the dogs.
I sell the o Tom tick removers and here vets sell the frontline spray but I wont use it. I'm reasonably convinced it has organophosphates in it. I feed my dogs with a tea spoon of horse garlic powder sprinkled over their food one a week. It seems to kill ticks and fleas.
I'm glad we dont have your insect life here but I tend nowadays to stay away from chemicals wherever possible. I know its a none starter in Canada, when I was in Alberta the insects were the size of Chinook helicopters and thats just the mossies!

Horrible creatures. Even though I spend a lot of time outside I haven't had one yet and I hope I never do, they are so gross. My husband has had so many on him and one in a particularly bad place for him. Creepy yucky things.

The New England Journal of Medicine (one of the best, I gather) had an article stating that a tick has to be attached for 24 +hours before there was any danger of Lyme Disease. http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM200107123450207

In tick country, take a moment before you go to bed and check yourself out. They can climb like crazy, so check your whole body.

They're still a &%!! nuisance.

that area is well known for its high tick population, several research studies done in that area showing high tick population from Kingston east to perth.

there are some products you can use on your dog. the most effective one is called advantix made by Bayer. very effective product.
some formulation of other permethrin products will work as well.
contact your vet regarding the advantix, im sure they stock it in that area.

Yup nasty little bastiches. I don`t care if it`s deer ticks or wood ticks makes my skin crawl. Nothing gets your attention when your out fixing fence and feel some little bugger crawling around in a spot below the belt but above the knees.

That's the stuff I was looking for, thanks!!

I have found two of them on my dogs, one from greenwood conservation in Ajax and one from a farm in north whitby. I use revolutions but it doesn't seem to work. I'm glad we don't have the infestation some of you guys deal with.

whenever i am in the woods during the tick season. i personally tuck all my clothes in from my boots up to the top of my pants . then my shirt etc . every once in a while i can see them on the outside of my clothing climbing up .i usually take them off and crush or burn them .

My dog picked up quite a few ticks in the first couple years we had him, including from our back yard. Started using Advantix and an anti tick shampoo once a month a couple years back and havn't had a single tick since.

Revolution will kill ticks but they would have to feed in order for it to work.
You will find them attached but dead.
The recommended product for ticks is called advantix but it will not work for heartworm and fleas.

good point

If you do find one that has sucked your blood, apparently it's easier to test for Lyme disease if you keep the tick. Tag it, bag it, see your physician.

My couson was sick for months after being bit by a tic. Unfortunatly she didnt connect her sickness with the tic bite and it took forever to find the problem and cure her. Not fun.

We are infested around my area with ticks. There are dozens of cases of lyme disease here. It can be a horrible disease with permanent effects. Permethrin is a great solution but has not been approved by health Canada for sale in Canada as yet. I cross the border to Northern New York and buy it at Walmart. It is ok to personally bring it back into Canada.

I guess I'm lucky; we have tons of ticks here at home in Manitoba (just pulled the first one this year off my pants yesterday) but I've never seen a Deer Tick; nothing but Wood Ticks so far. They apparently don't transmit Lyme, but disgusting critters all the same.

Permethrin-treated clothing works pretty well; even Off! is better than nothing. But if you have been out all day and suspect you have ticks on you...and if you even suspect it, I can pretty much guarantee you do!...nothing beats a hot shower using Flea and Tick Shampoo sold for use on dogs. Doesn't smell bad, lathers really nicely, seems to kill the suckers. I follow up with a normal soap wash/rinse immediately afterwards.

Permethrin-treated flame suit on! :)
