I have just bought a savage 93 22WMR and using ballistic tips, they do not seem to expand fast enough and mostly pass through the gopher with out killing them. It messes them up and they are not likely to survive but they are in good enough shape to get back down the hole with out a quick kill. Has any one else had this problem

That's got to be disappointing. I find most hollow point 22LR rimfire will either drop the gopher or send into death convulsions and it doesnt' make it down the hole. I'd expect as good or better from magnum.

The plain-jane-silver-box Winchester brand 40 gr hollow points do the trick for me...

If you go to the link you see what they look like...

Well I bought a brick with the gun so I would like to use some of them up but I was thinking of going to the hollow points after

I've used the CCI 30 grain VMAX load and the Reminton AccuTip load. Both blow gophers into tiny bits - noticeably moreso than HMR's do, especially out past 30-40 yards

Shot placement still counts - even with gophers. Dial your scope in with a box and then go and shoot them with the rest of your brick. I'm sure you'll need to buy another brick soon....

Good luck - SD

I dont believe it... you must be just grazing them. No gopher can survive the impact of a 22 mag. Re zero the rifle.

Say what brand of 22 mag ammo is this.
I have shot the Remington VMaxs and they just blow up.
Also the only shell my rifle will shoot.

I shoot the Remington Premier (Ballistic Tips) and the Winchester Supreme (HP) and no gopher that has been touched by either has ever crawled away. Usually they are torn apart rather convincingly.

That's to bad, I was really expecting such bullets to be nearly as devastating as the poly tipped V-Max bullets used in 17 HMR ammo.

Both loads suck. The bullet used is a V-Max I believe. I shot gophers with the WMR with the same bullet and had the same results. With the HMR I never had any spectacular shots either. The best I found for the WMR were any of the hollow point stuff, especially the black box Supreme load from Winchester.
