I just got a norinco M-14 and would like to take it to the range today. I need to clean off all the factory oil it came with. Do you know if its inside the bolt and trigger group also or can i just do a field strip and get it all out of the action, run a rod through the bore and bring it to the range? Or should i tear down the bolt and trigger group also and get it 100% oil free then re-lube it?

Thanks!

get all the cosmo out or everything. Boiling water works well. Then lube oprod, oprod guide, spring, barrel hump, trigger, roller, etc. Don't lube the firing pin, bolt internals, or piston though.

Then bring it out to a match, and shoot the snot out of it.

so can i just drop the bolt and trigger group into boiling water without tearing it down at all? How long should i boil it for? will it not rust?

thanks for the info!

There are many ways to get rid of cosmo. Boiling water in a tub is one of them. I take everything off the barreled action, and put it into a tub of boiling water that covers all the metal. Then wipe off, and lube.

Barreled action, pour boiling water through the whole thing. Wipe off, and run some pull throughs through the barrel.

Sounds easy enough.. if you cant dry inside the heard to reach areas tho will it cause rust? How long do you leave it in boiling water for? should i leave the pot boiling on the stove when i dump the stuff in or take it off?

thanks again!

Grease the hooks on the trigger, the bolt races and the operating rod recess for the bolt lug.

My advice is the ignore the first couple dozen shots. Just shoot and clean the barrel. Let the shooting wear down the high spots of the Parkerizing, and tell you where to lube more. All guns are simple machines that need to be working to be effective. If something breaks in the beginning, that is a bad part. If it breaks after a thousand rounds, that was a good time.

clean it yes, grease it no- you run that piston dead dry, no matter what
pull up fm 23-8 and download that- that's the field manual for the m14- just ignore the refernces to the full auto bits- what part of the city are you in?

Just went to military rifle collectors site. One guy uses a steamer I guess the stuff melts right off into a plastic bucket.

You've got me worried. Mine came with just a slight oil film new in box. The mags were in sealed plastic with light oil. Hoppes cleaning seems to have it bone dry.

Should they all be packed in Cosmoline when new ??

thanks for the info! I live in the NW, over by COP

i can't do you any good, i'm down by heritage park- bushnell 3200, arms 18 mount- if i were closer, i could show you a few tricks - i have 3 real ones and a rinco- however, if you post your problems here, i'll do what i can to help you sort these things out-i've been around a while

Mine was badly caked in Cosmo-one of the worst examples I've owned. It was packed into the rear part of the reciever so much that when the rifle heated up with firing, I would get drops of it all over my glasses. It also went from semi to single action one day when the spindle valve became fouled with cosmo and powder grime. Finally, I just blasted all the metal with aeresol brake cleaner, and that did the trick.

I cleaned it the best i could. dropped the bolt and trigger group into boiling water for a few minutes. Pored boiling water down the bore followed by a few passes with a bore sneak. the rest i cleaned with "gun scrubber" its just overpriced break clean i think haha..

I took her to the range and she was shooting beautifully. cant wait to get a scope on her and do some serious blasting!

I hear these things are accurate out to 800+ yards? I'd like to get into long range shooting. Any suggestions on optics that would be good to that kind of range? I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to optics so any input would be very much appreciated.
