I came into some 180gr. winchester silvertips for my .308. Anybody use them on whitetails? I don't reload and have never used the silvertips, having had good luck with remmington stuff. Any opinions/experience?
 
They will be deadly on whitetails. Expansion/penetration seem to be somewhat erratic on moose and elk from what I've heard and read, so I have only used them on deer. No complaints on the few deer I have shot with them.
 
I've used the original silvertips in 308/180gr and 358/200gr on deer,moose,goat,wolf etc. from 10 yards to way out there.

I have never had a bullet failure, they always expanded and killed extremely well.
 
Are these the old style winchester silvertips, or the new style combined technology winchester/nosler ballistic silvertips?

The old style ones are reputed to be a good solid bullet, although I've never used them. The new ballistic silvertips were, in my experience (Mule deer shot approx 200yds, 130gr. 270win) garbage. Penetration was extremely shallow, there were no significant fragments of the bullets left. Shrapnel managed to penetrate the diaphragm and puncture the stomach (both bullets entered just behind the shoulder, broadside). It made the deer dead, which some would call success, but it did not perform in the manner I would consider acceptable.

Good bullets for coyotes. Not deer, and definitely not moose or elk, IMO.
 
Will work on deer, bear or moose.

They don't make 180gr Ballistic Silvertips for the .308
 
girlfriend shot a black bear with 220 grains and 300 h&h, the result was good penetration and a dead bear. i m pretty sure i ve some more somewhere if i have again to use that caliber i wont hesitate to use it.

I have used 150 grain Silvertips in 308 & 30-30.
Always the perfect choice for deer. Bang flops all. Now one year I couldn't get any Silvertips so I substituted Remington Core-Lokt. More accurate by a bit on paper targets (doesn't matter on a deer's generous kill zone) but the deer that were shot, seemed to move a bit before croaking. I am taking about a few yards here. Bullet often went into three large pieces in different wound tracks and some would call this "failure."
I still had a very dead and tagged deer for my morning efforts.
Old style Winchester Silvertips ahead of Remington Core-Lokts by a nose IMHO.
 
I am indeed refering to the old style silvertips. I have experience with federal stuff, remmington, winchester power points and the like. Just not these silvertips. Looking at the packaging, it seems like they are recommeded for heavier game. I was concerned about expansion in a deer sized animal. It seems like I should'nt worry.

Exactly, don't worry about it! Just about any bullet out there will drop a whitetail if put in the right spot. The silver tips you speak of are more than enough to do the job if you do yours.
 
Before I started hand loading I used only Winchester Power Points. They worked, stopped everything in one shot. Winchester Power Points were a premium bullet at one time and are a step below Winchester Silver Tips. So I am sure Winchester Silver Tips would work fine.

That is what i've been using for the past 3 years @ 1 deer/year. If your aim is good, it's an unforgiving bullet.
I don't know what they put in these silvertips but the meat tasted real good... :D
 
I have shot deer,moose,bear and elk from 10 feet to 650 yards with the 180 grain silvertip launched from a 300 Winchester magnum loaded hot. They performred flawlessly. I have 100's of the 130 grain for the 270 Weatherby, and they work excellent. If I had known that they were goung to discontinue them, I'd have got more.

Discontinued? The walmart in Whitecourt has tons of the 168gr and everytime I buy a few boxes the shelves are full again the next day
 
I have had better performance on deer with 150-165 grain bullets than with any 180 grain loads but the Silvertips are fine loads, better suited to moose if they are the old style sivertips.
 
I have some old 180 and 220 grain Silvertips my dad got for his '06 back in the day, they seem to be a fair bit shorter than a regular soft point but should work just fine for pretty much anything. Can't see a .308 being much different - they aren't exactly tough controlled expansion bullets, they'll open up just fine.
