Hello CGN,

I just made the move to Thunder Bay for college and I am wondering if anyone who lives here, or has lived here, can recommend a good sporting good/firearm shop in the area ?

On that note, any recommendations for a good range ?

Thanks!

GMK armory is your best bet for firearms. There are other smaller stores like Moose Hill Sports or Pritchards, but they are more home based stores. DNR sporting goods for some rifles, lots of fishing gear. For other outdoor stores with no firearms, you have Chaltrek/Ostrom outdoors and Gear Up for Outdoors.

As for clubs, what do you shoot? The Nolalu range has a 300m rifle range, and the Fish & Game club has a 100m rifle range. For pistols, F&G has lots of pistol ranges for IPSC, CDP (IDPA) and PPC. GMK also has an indoor 20yard pistol range.

Hi guys,

Thanks for replying. Presently I shoot high power center fire rifles (8mm Mauser, 7.62x54r, .303 British for instance) and high power pistol cartridges (9mm Luger, 7.63 Mauser, and 7.62 Nagant presently).

Many of the ranges just outside Toronto allowed one or two tries as a guest then you had to become a member and pay the membership fee plus an initiation fee (came out to $500 for one range and subsequent $250 ish for the years afterwards). Rates got better the further you drove away from Toronto. How are the rates for ranges this far north ?

I have shot at 300m and it wasn't bad but I didn't like having to change the targets and wait for other people to finish. 100m would be perfect.

One range in Southern Ontario allowed unrestricted guest use and access to the range (it is the one in St. Catherines for those that know it by name, I can't remember at this time). Great range, well kept, and $20 to shoot the whole day, pistol or rifle, was pretty darn neat.

Thank you for the help.

Can't say what the cost is for Nolalu, but the F&G club is $100. The only problem is that the year is half over, but you still have to pay full price (Which is dumb, IMO)

The F&G club allows someone to accompany a member as a guest two times, and it costs $5. After two times, a membership is required.

Wow, that GMK Armory is just down the street from me, I will certainly check them out next week. Do they have milsurps in stock or newly made firearms ?

I have also marked the gun show at Kakabeka Falls on August 27th, anyone from CGN going to be there ? I'd love to meet up with some fellow CGNers. Are milsurps a common appearance at this show ?

You will like GMK, lots of rifles and handguns to check out and as others have said a good bunch of knowledgeable guys work and hangout there LOL.

I shoot at the Fish and Game and as mentioned the general membership is 100.00 per year + CSSA insurance unless you have your CSSA from another club. There is only a 100 and an 80 yard rifle range along with 3 50 yard ranges and 6 25 yard ranges but it is less than 10 minutes from County Fair Plaza instead of the 45 mins each way to go to the Nolalu range.

If you want more info, shoot me a pm with your email and I'll send you a range information sheet that I have given to most of the local gunshops to answer questions and provide contact info.

Last year when I went I remember seeing a Finnish Mosin Nagant, and also a Norc M14, but from what I remember (which is not much) it was mostly hunting rifles and shotguns. I might go this year, depending on my work schedule. I'll also send you a PM.

Have shot the Nolalu range and it is quite good. Limiting yourself to only 100 yards might get to be a little mundane after awhile.

GMK are great people, very friendly and knowledgeable.

They have lots of prohibs at very good prices if you had the proper license.

I wish I had a prohibited license...I would be going Luger happy if I did.

I looked on Google maps at 300 Water St. South and I can't seem to find GMK via street view. Is it in a building right beside Arnone Transport Ltd ?

Yup. If you look on Streetview, go on the intersection of Court Street South and John Street, and then follow it south a couple of clicks down.

Hobo or not, he knows his stuff in that gun room :D.

Thanks for tolerating my hand held evaluation of all the milsurps you have in stock, even with the phone ringing off the hook.
