crown land

Back when the MNR had some funding they used to print crown land maps. There are a few mapping companies still around that produce similar maps showing crown land clearly, Algonquin Outfitters carries a few by a company called MITIG.

I'm also curious about target shooting on crown land. I'd be worried about MNR trying claim your hunting out of season

There is next to no crown land in SW Ontario. I think your automatically considered to be hunting if your in the bush with a gun, but the defense to this is to have targets setup (probably not best to be in full camo either :))

I thought a lot of people used the Simcoe County Forests for target, but IIRC, someone just got a ticket for doing that since its against their rules.

Onagoth is right, you gotta go north of the gta for the free land. Kawartha's, Haliburton, Bancroft etc.

watch out for provincial parks that back onto crown land

If you really have to go north of sudbury, consider joining one of our local clubs. Crean Hill is the club I belong to. Plenty of shooting area. And we are putting in a 200 yard course this year.

Just a suggestion from a biased club member.

How about gravel pits? My instructor for my PAL/RPAL briefly mentioned about shooting in gravel pits. Stupid me for not asking where. Anyone know any gravel pits north of Toronto that people shoot in?

I'm going on holidays at the end of July near Grundy Lake PP (south of Sudbury). Any nearby crown land where I can let a few rounds off?

Our family cottage is on 522 that grundy lake pp is on. There is lots of crown up there but not sure how you tell what land is crown. My family has hunted on the crown land for decades during season. Some of the locals should be able to tell you. We are further off the highways towards port loring. I don't get up there as much as i'd like but have did some plinking up there. Have fun it is a great area.

about 1.5 hours from the core of GTA, you could be closer, I don't know your location

Silverdale Sports Centre
4948 4th Concession Rd
St Anns, ON L0R 1Y0, Canada

edit - from Hamilton,,,,your about an hour....

I spend most of my range time at HAHA in Ancaster (20 minutes from me). However, the point is that Silverdale is not very close to Grundy Lake, now is it? ;)

Gravel pits in Southern Ontario are usually private property and posted as such. The owners take a very dim view of people using them as impromptu shooting ranges.

So I was looking at maps of crown land in ontario. Apparently there is federal crown land and provincial crown land. Lots of the provincial crown land is used as provincial parks but is still crown property not the provinces. Does this mean I can go target shooting in provincial parks that are on crown land? That doesnt seem right but technically the land is owned by the queen and not canada. Im confused

No you can't shoot in provincial parks as they all have rules against guns in the parks. Other than some in polar bear territory as of late.

Sorry, but not the answer you're lookin for.

Gentlemen,

Can you please advise if it is allowed to practice target shooting (non-restricted) on Crown Land?

Cheers,

Yes the discharge of firearms is legal on crown land assuming that there are no discharge bylaws to the contrary in the area.

Some argument arises when the hunting regs come into play, as you could possibly be viewed as a poacher during hunting seasons if you don't have the proper license. The easy answer is to be sure you have targets posted and with you and to not walk around with a loaded gun, or dress in camo, etc. The other option is obviously to have a hunting license for that particular season.
