I would go with the 35 Remington. It has history and I like a larger caliber. Having said that, there is nothing wrong with the 30-30 for your purposes. By the way, Rocket Surgery's photo of that Model 94 makes my levergun photos look a tad boring.
My personal opinion is stay away from the 1892's, the curved buttstock makes the rifle look like it has down syndrome. The shape / form of the gun seriously looks like something an ewok would carry into battle in the final Star Wars movie, they're that ugly. I don't think an uglier gun exists than the 1892 model lever guns .... The 1894 style just commands respect, and unleashes a wave of death on any animal that exists in the woods: Bears, chickens, pigs, sparrows, trout, you name it. If you're the fairy man, you could consider the pistol grip style, but the straight stock looks that much more badass.
Just south of where you were looking, Doug. Er...maybe not...
...that's good advice if you want to look at pictures of yourself holding your lever gun. Not much help for anything else.![]()
But looks mean a lot. Would you date a fugly fat girl because she was efficient? I wouldn't compromise, I want it all. The 1894 Win 30-30 has it all, even better with the AE model in case you want to do load development at 100y.
Yeah see I agree with Doug, lever guns are a very personal thing. I've handled the Brownings, Marlin, Winchester, Rossi, etc and they all felt different. It's pretty hard to ask for advice, like Doug said, you usually get opinions.

I want to get a lever gun for hunting here in NS and NL. got three questions up for bashing;
what gun, I can get a 464 with 10 shots fired for the same price i can get a pre 64 94. for a little more i can get 1955 335 SC in 35 rem?
30/30 or 35, I could use the extra punch of the 35 in NL this fall but want the better performer, keep in mind i will be shooting leverloution?
optics, i want open sights and see a lot of people have scopes mounted. I figure for the type of gun, types of terrain it will be used in and the effective range that a scope isn’t really necessary?
Best post in the thread IMO.I have lost track of how many lever guns I have owned, it is certainly several hundred.
In my view, you are getting some good advice, and you are also getting some pretty strongly held OPINIONS. The two are not the same.
I suggest you physically HANDLE a bunch of lever guns - Winchester 94s and 88s, Marlin 336s, 30ASs etc etc, Savage 99s and 1899s, and Browning BLRs. ALMOST FOR SURE, one of them will fit you better than the rest do. A good-fitting gun will tend to be more accurate in your hands, and then it's all about shot placement and decent ammo/bullets.
It sounds like you have not considered the .358 Win cartridge, which is a heck of a good cartridge and a lot more "oomph" than .35 Rem - not that you necessarily need it from your description of your hunting.
My personal "go to" deer rifle for years has been a BLR in .308 Win, which is scoped for these tired old eyes of mine. But I have HUNTED with 88s, 94s, 99s, 1899s, 444s, 1894s, an 1895, BLRs and probably some other lever guns I do not remember any more.
Buy what fits and get good at shooting it, the moose won't know what hit them!

For me, the '94 is my go to gun, in 30-30. Game of all sizes just falls down in front of it for me.
I also like the 88 Winchester in 308.
Not a huge fan of the BLR, but that's mostly because my wife's rifle has issues, (when she's using it only) and I get the complaints.
Oh look, no one suggested the Sako.
A fire sight in front (fiber optic) and a williams peep sight in the back. It is in a league of it's own when talking about open sights!
The Savage is still my fave tho. Just something about a 308 levergun.
bogie, ya'all gotta try a BLR 308 to compare, and then there is the FINNWOLF! not to worry, Mad Dog will buy your 99 off you!![]()
