RFB initial thoughts, Range report ***JANUARY 31st ammo test at bottom of OP***

The Burris PEPR mount with quick release arrived today, courtesy of Fireball. This is the newest version of the mount. Others on this site have used the non quick release and when asked have said the height for their scopes was perfect. Getting your scope the perfect height seems to be a bit of a challenge with the RFB. Well, it is the perfect height. I'm very happy with how it turned out.

One of the concerns when we ordered the quick release version was the fact that the quick release is on the left side which interfers with the charging handle. Honestly it would tick me off but I'd live with it just due to the rest of the mount being pefect. As it turns out though, you can turn the quick release handles so they face backwards instead of forward. This solved the problem. The quick release latch now sits exactly where the charging handle stops. It works great.

Kel-Tec RFB, Burris Fullfield II 3-9x 40mm with Ballistic plex, and Burris PEPR quick release mount. For those wanting the component list.

I'm really looking forward to shooting this rifle some more. With the previous rings I had the scope was never the right height. That metal stock isn't much fun when you're having to press your cheek into it, or do the looking over the scope trick because it's too low.

Some pictures (Yes it balances on the pistol grip).

why not just put the mount on backwards so the latches are on the other side:confused:. There is definetly enough rail length there that your scope will still be in the same spot.

Why would I? There's no need to. The mount lets you move the quick release levers to face back. Also with the RCMP we're taught to use a clam shell hold for racking the pistol. apparently I use this same technique with rifle charging handles, because my thumb is never in the way. You can use this technique with gloves on as well.

Seems to work perfectly as is. I put some rounds on paper the other day. Just with garbage ammo though. The mount worked perfectly. No problems at all. Height was perfect, and no issues with the charging handle at all.

I have two loads I want to try. Also with a bipod. I'm wondering if the slight lip on the front causes the rifle to pull up slightly as it recoils back. Either way, I'll get the ammo going and try both loads with front bags and with a bipod.

Interesting way of doing it. I only have 1 mag so the thought never occurred to me.

If your wondering what the mags are here is the post from youtube;

Those are Thermold FAL-M polymer(zytel)magazines(made in USA). I milled off the rear part of the top 2 bands on a router table to allow them to fit in the RFB magwell. So far I am pleased with them. Rock River arms now sells the same Thermold mag minus the top 2 bands for their LAR-8. It also fits the RFB. Check their website under magazines for pics. DS arms is also now producing 20 and 30 RD metal FAL metric mags in the USA:). I think that is what the newest RFB's are shipping with.

That's the AK style of changing mags. Use the new one to hit the release first. Works ok. It's still slower than the Tavor or AR but not too bad. You won't be winning any speed matches, but then again it's .308 not .223 :p

I was trying that out the other day only with the left hand and keeping my right hand on the pistol grip. It's better than using the shooting hand and looking over the rifle like the video. Still takes some getting used to though.

OK, crap, I'm starting to warm up to this thing. Remind me who threads the barrel and puts on a brake. Cost? What is a good brake to get?

Tell me about it!
I had one.....kind of liked it...sold it....now have another one inbound.
It is a very appealing little creature, and will now find it's way into the 'inner sanctum of units to NEVER be sold/traded again'....
Of course, I say that now.....

After firing both of my RFB's today I realized how important a brake is. The new RFB-DS came with a brake on it from Dlask, where the original didn't. There was way more control and it was much easier to stay on target with the new one, not to mention there was less felt recoil. If you decide to get one, I would recommend the first thing you do is install a good muzzle break.

Yes, those RFBs are nice. One each hand :).

I have to admit the idea has crossed my mind. I find scope bite almost a reality when on the bench with a 3" eye relief. I wouldn't bother with a flash hider, but a muzzle brake would be worthwhile. I'm also leaning towards one of those Vertical handgrips with the bipod built in, like the ones you have. I've seen them before and for the type of rifle the RFB is, I think they are fairly well suited. Please let us know how you like them.

Oh by the way, some scott's Turf builder and keep the grass between 2.5-3" in height. :p Hhaha sorry couldn't resist. It's been a tough "summer" for the grass this year.

The bipods do the job pretty well... They are not going to be as stable as a good high end bipod would be, but I think they are the best of the grip/bipod combos out there. When it's in the closed foregrip position, it's really stable and gives you lots to hold on to and it really helps you keep control of the rifle. I have tried pretty much every type of fore grip and bipod out there, and I would have no reservations recommending this one.

Anybody have these in stock right now ? I love the looks of pbr streetgangs tan one with brake . Epoxy 7 , you mentioned 'Fireball' for your mount . Does Fireball bring them in or does he work a counter in a gun shop ? Way too expensive for me right now but i do have stuff that i never use that i could sell . pbr streetgang , did it come tan or did you deck it ?

It was a limited run from Kel-tec. Everything was done at Kel-tec except the brake which had to be done in Canada due to export laws.

He had two of them. I think he was planning on using them both. Not sure which store he bought them from. They weren't cheap but were still a lot less then the other quick release mounts. So far they seem pretty good. It also works perfectly for my Tavor.

Those are KX3's right? Where did you find them at? I was toying with going that route also (presently have a PWS brake on mine).

Put a couple of new brakes on the ladies...I think it makes them a little prettier, and quieter...

Which brake. How does it do with the recoil? I'm considering a brake on mine. Doesn't need one when shooting off hand, but when shooting benched it jumps a fair bit.

Dlask Arms XB1... So yeah basically it's identical to the KX3... But they were $99.00 per ( including the threading for .308) and took 2 days. To answer your question Epoxy7, they help a bit with recoil and a bit more with muzzle climb but where they really shine is in noise reduction. They funnel noise and blast outward in a cone like fashion, almost eliminating the need for hearing protection for the shooter and anyone standing beside or behind the shooter. It is however NOT A SUPRESSOR, but merely redirects the sound away from the shooter.

Thanks for the info...I'd thought Dlask had stopped making the XB1...so did you thread your RFB 1/2x28 and just have the XB1 bored out for .308? or do they actually have a 5/8x24 XB1?

Does anyone have an issue and solution to the problem of ejected brass dinging the barrel? Took my RFB to the range for the first time on Sunday. Very accurate, reliable functioning, light recoil.
Don't like the brass marking the barrel and not easy to get the right optic and mount option. Also found my cheek a bit tender after shooting.
