I dropped in for a visit with my Uncle the other day...we don't see each
other as often as in the past as he now lives 6 hours away.

We were catching up etc. when two deer appeared in his yard. We
started talking about hunting when he mentioned that he may as well
give me his old rifle, as he wasn't planning on using it anymore.

It originally belonged to my Great Uncle...my Grandma's brother, whom I never met.
This rifle is pretty much brand new...a few small scrapes on the stock, but the bore is MINT.

Looks like an early post '64 to me. Did you check the serial number to see what year it was made? You say 1964, so it was made then or you are just saying post'64 model?

That's in lovely shape. A great gift for sure. Hold on to it, and shoot it!

The serial number is really low in the 750000 range, which is 1964.

I'll be leaving my 7mm Rem Mag at home this year and using this rifle for deer.

She's a beauty, and the family history ensures that I'll keep it until it's time to pass on to another family member.

I new it was early, it looks like the first magnum I ever fired, in 300WM, back nearly 40 years ago in my friends fathers post64 M70. I've been hooked ever since on them and love the slickness of that push feed M70 action.

There sure was some class in that era of time.
Looks like a Redfield with tipoff mounts.
Neat tidy way to utilise the open sights without
using those ungaudly suitcase handles.
Nice gift, now wear the new off of it, enjoy.

Yes, it's a Redfield 2-7 with tipoff mounts. I'm heading to the range with it tomorrow!

I wonder if you could spare some humor for me BB.
I have that same scope on a rifle here.
The optics are nice and clear.
On 2 power, I can focus the scope nicely by adjusting the rear lense.
When I move to 7, I need to refocus using the same technique.
Now I leave it on 5 and focus it and leave it.
Just wondering if you could see how this one does?
Keeping me informed would be appreciated.
I figure my Redfield would fit the early sixties era as well.
Cheers.
Looky.

That one's in exceedingly good condition given the fact that it's older than half the guys on the site! My brother used the same rifle, albeit a much more worn version, in Africa last summer until a scope mount calved on him. No cachet to them but they're certainly up to the task.

I also had that exact same scope on a 270.
I lost a match because of it. I sighted in the day before, very carefully, using 7x.
Next day at the match I was using a lower power, and shot low. By the time I trigged on, I had lost enough points to be an also ran in the match.
Later at the range I proved that changing the power also raised or lowered the point of impact.
Redfield gave me a whale of a deal on a new one. They sent me a newer model one for about 1/4 the retail price of the scope.

Unless I'm missing something (and I'm known to do that), the rear focus ring is to adjust the clarity of the cross hairs, usually done against the open sky. Not for focusing at any given range. Or is this one of the BDC Redfields (Accutrac, if memory serves)? - dan

You are correct.

You know Kam, ...the more I look at that rifle,...... i'm thinking, is that the exact model the RCMP issued, iron sighted, to detachments 45 years ago in .308WIN, or were they pre-64's??
Seems I've seen several back in the 70's, but wouldn't dare to guess pre or post 64, from memory.:canadaFlag:

I don't know this one. The chap above me here would know better than me.

I'm almost dead certain they were the light weight, pre 64s, that were issued to the RCMP.
We are all admiring his rifle. It is in pristine condition and a fine rifle.
But when they came out it was a huge let down from the pre 64s.
On those early models the barel is floating, with about 1/4 inch clearance around it. One of the first complaints about it was this huge gap filled up with such things as pine needles, when one was hunting with it.
After a few years they had the stock fitting much better.
Now, don't trash me for running down the rifle. I'm only stating facts.

Bump BongoBob up......
Any news on how the Redfield worked out?

Changing the power adjustment of the scope did not seem to effect the focus enough for me to notice.

The rifle shot pretty good with Remington 180gr factory ammo. MOA of deer for sure...:) About 2.5" at 100 yrds. I think it can do better.

I'm going to try a Leupold VX II 3-9x40 on it next and see if things tighten up at all. If not I'll try a few series of handloads until I find something that works well. I like all my rifles to shoot as close to 1 MOA as possible.

I'lll keep you all posted.
