Looking for some opinions, first off this is not me trying to be cheap and not spend 700$ on a CZ858, I have never owned one but have only read and heard good things, however I am a big fan of the sks and was thinking of getting another and putting it in a tapco stock with one of the tapco mags. I know that if you total up the price with all the stuff on the sks it just may be the same price as the CZ858. So the question is, should I dress up an sks or get a CZ858. I now neither of the rifles are that expensive and some of you will say get both, and I probably will in time, so witch one should I get first?

Everybody has their own opinions. My opinion is that the CZ/VZ platform is not enough rifle for the money you are spending. I purchased a early 858 and sold it unfired, it also had the gremlin that was reported to me from the new owner. It is the only non restricted rifle that resembles the AK that is why people like it but the novelty wears off. Tapco stocks fit nice and are functional on the SKS. The T6 or the new timbersmith. The last time I checked a SKS rifle with a Tapco T6 stock and a 5/20 magazine is under $350.00, that a long way from $700.00.

I really like my CZ858. So much so that I paid the money to have it tenifer coated & now shoot cheap corrosive ammo through it with impunity!

Had many sks rifles & sold or gave them all away... I like them, don't get me wrong, I just like the 858 BETTER!

Cheers
Jay

I own several of both, but rarely shoot the sks's now. They are , however, in different price points, and do the same thing, more or less. If you buy the CZ, you won't bother with an sks, but I can't say the opposite.

I have to respectfully disagree. I can certainly see where your coming from but I feel a bit differently about the 2 rifles. To me, the CZ is much lighter, more compact, better balanced and just feels more natural for me on the range. It has several nice features over the SKS that I find beneficial for run an gun type shooting. For plinking, especially off the bench, the SKS is more fun. Again, just constructive disagreement. To the OP, if you've got an SKS already and are thinking of getting something more, dare I say, "assault" like for lack of a better term than I feel the price of the CZ over the SKS is money well spent. For LCF and plain ol plinking, saving some cash on the SKS may be a better idea. Like BJS says, its about half the price of the CZ. The VZ/CZ aftermarket is geared more toward high quality parts for serious shooting while the SKS aftermarket is more cheap junk to accessorize an inexpensive rifle. In the end the CZ will be a natural performer in fast paced run an gun shooting while the tapco'd SKS will be heavier, poorly balanced and more difficult to manipulate. For my kind of shooting the CZ fits.

I wouldn't get an 858 knowing it stands a good chance of getting prohib'd.

These evil baby killing machines? They are scary!

Can you explain a bit more about this 'tenifer coating"? Thanks.

nevermind, shouldn't be an #######

Anyways, the vz58, I'd get one off the EE if you're not opposed to a used rifle.
Save a hundred, maybe two.
The vz58 fits me a lot better then the SKS. I love the sks, it's simple and it works, but it doesn't handle as nicely in my experience.

In that case ... You better not get any guns.
Geez - Just buy the gun you want, and be happy you have the dilemma between 858 or SKS.

To the OP - I understand d the dilemma. Cost is a factor for two similar semi auto rifles that shoot 5 rounds of 7.62x39. If I got a CZ or CSA it would be acrestricted model. The NR 858 just looks dorky imho
