Well this weekend I watched and took a couple pictures(photo section of CGN) of hundreds of tuktu(caribou) coming down to my wee community and crossing the Meladine River ... best part is I hear there are THOUSANDS more coming so I'll wait until this coming weekend and hopefully find me a couple nice fat ones to hunt/shoot. Of course after this beautiful warm weekend it's bloody pouring rain and cold ... never fails ... HAHA ... :D So, with all that being said ... what are my fellow CGNer's gonna suggest for calibre??? :D :p

Hey there Otokiak,

We are seeing the caribou coming here too since last week. Still waiting for numbers like you are seeing now. (I am on the other side of the Hudson's Bay from you). We are going hunting this afternoon, looking forward to a nice day.

What caliber do people in your town typically use for hunting caribou?

Thanks for the pics Otokiak!! Brings back many a memory of my days in qamanituaq and igulik...Damn I miss the north!!! I gotta get up there for a visit! Thanks again

I am asking about calibers because I see a lot of people hunting caribou with .223 up here. Think it's more a choice of economics for some. Just wondering if it's a similar occurrence on the other side of the Bay.

Lots and lots of folks up on this side of the Hudson use 223 ... it's cheap and accurate enough to bag tuktu ... ;)

p.s. I have rifles from 22 up to 30-06 ... I'm just curious what others think I should use this coming weekend to bag me a couple nice fat ones ... :D

I've bagged about 15-18 caribou in the last 13 years and I've used a .307, .308 and .300 Win Magnum (no, you smart asses, not all at the same time). By far my Model 94 Centennial .307 is my favourite lever. I got my first NWT caribou with it. I hear of guys using .223 above the tree line but I never have. Guess I'm just a .30 cal lover.
