I stopped by LeBaron in Ottawa this morning to pickup the new Fall supplemental catalog and asked for 7.62x39. They were out of Mil Surplus but the cashier took out of the safe a box of 50 Hornady 7.62x39 for $39.99.

The round is loaded with the Hornady SST bullets. For more information go to the Hornady website at http://www.hornady.com/store/7.62X39-123-gr-SST/

Here are a few photos I took.

Good find!

"Regular" .308 ammo is ~ $20 for 20 rounds of the cheapy stuff so it's not that bad a price actually. Remember too that its hunting ammo not general plinking ammo.

Regards,

For $40 per 50 rounds, you'd be better off handloading...

Considering:
* ($40 per 50) is $0.80 per round.
* From the Hornady site, the SST bullets for handloading is $38 per 100.
* That means $0.42 ($0.80 - $0.38) is for the shell, the primer, the powder and the time I saved.

I hunt with an SKS so finding brass shells in the forest is nearly impossible. I find for the convenience of having a consistent commercial hunting round with a premium bullet, $0.80 per round is very reasonable. On a good hunt day I only need 1 round and maybe 2 on a very good day.

With that same logic you could purchase surplus ammo, pull the bullet and seat one of the Hornady hunting bullets on top and still be cheaper than this stuff.

$0.80 for a Hornady round

or

$0.38 for the bullet
$0.20 for the surplus round

That leaves $0.22 for the powder and your time.

What kind of value do you put on your time?

$0.22 for your time, just the use the same powder. Or you can dump it all, and weigh each charge if you want more accuracy (again, using the same powder).

What Beltfed said. I takes the Czech stuff, pull bullet and seat a Hornady 123 SST. Goes Huntin!:D I tried dumping all the powder out of the cases, average the weight, powder each case accordingly and then seat bullet. Still shoots about 2 inch group out of XCR. Good enough for the range this round works at. Interesting note, Czech surplus out the XCR will shoot just over the inch very consistently.

As per 'Back40sniper',

If you hunt and use hunting bullets, buy a case or so of surplus and a box of 50 or 100 premium hunting bullets.
Pull 20 or 30 FMJ and seat the premium bullets or whatever you'll need for hunting season and use the rest of the surplus as-is to get practiced up for those off-hand and kneeling shots.
Pulling a hundred bullets and re-seating premium hunting bullets in their place should take a half hour or so.
