150gr TSX in .30-30

Barnes makes a 150gr TSX FP for the 30-30. I bet it will expand at 30-30 velocities! :)

An email to Barnes should answer the question- they are pretty quick at returning emails.
 
I wouldn't think the Barnes bullet would be necessary at 30-30 velocities. Any good cup and core would work very well. In 30-06 and up I use the 168 gr tsx, but find they work better driven harder. When I used a 308 for deer I loaded 150 gr ballistic tips, but an old fashioned Hornady would have worked just as well.
 
I don't understand why you would want to use a very expensive bullet that has limited expansion characteristics in a 30/30, esp. when standard bullets work so well (expand) at those velocities.

I am trying to get away from lead. Having little ones around has made me think about that more.

You know, I have heard that over and over. I have been loading for a while now. I raised 5 children in the same house that I loaded in. Once, and somewhere on here I posted the results, there was a lot of concern going on about the dangerous lead levels on a loading bench and including lead bullets.
So, I went to work, borrowed a heavy metals analyzer from hazmat and checked my bench and bullet storage. After 5 years of reloading and not taking any extra steps in containing the "lead hazard", I was not even close to the mid range of the acceptable levels.
I am not sure about the actual hazard of such claims. That being said, I have not let my kids load with me without gloves and goggles, that way they are not putting anything in their mouths. I think that that is the danger.

My main concern is eating game harvested with lead bullets. For example, from the Government of North Dakota:

Based on the results of the CDC blood lead level study and a Minnesota bullet study, the North Dakota Department of Health has developed the following recommendations to minimize the risk of harm to people who are most vulnerable to the effects of lead:

•Pregnant women and children younger than 6 should not eat any venison harvested with lead bullets.
•Older children and other adults should take steps to minimize their potential exposure to lead, and use their judgment about consuming game that was taken using lead-based ammunition.
•The most certain way of avoiding lead bullet fragments in wild game is to hunt with non-lead bullets.
•Hunters and processors should follow the processing recommendations developed by the North Dakota Department of Agriculture.

The ballistic tip bullet (rapid expansion) had the highest fragmentation rate, with an average of 141 fragments per carcass and an average maximum distance of 11 inches from the wound channel. In one carcass, a fragment was found 14 inches from the exit wound.


Soft point bullets (rapid expansion) left an average of 86 fragments at an average maximum distance of 11 inches from the wound channel. In this research, bonded lead-core bullets (controlled expansion, exposed lead core) performed almost identically to the soft-core bullets and left an average of 82 fragments with an average maximum distance of nine inches from the wound.
 
The Barnes 150gr 30/30 round was designed to function in 30/30 rifles and mushroom at speeds commonly found in the 30/30. The 30/30 barnes round is not just a normal Barnes bullet it is different.
 
Not having to clean up bits of lead from carcasses is a really nice thing with the Barnes bullets.

I think that Barnes should look into a 130gr FP bullet for the 30-30. Probably turn the 30-30 world upside down! :)
 
I have and have had alot of relatives that lived to very old ages out here on the prairies, they all ate wild meat shot with lead bullets all their lives, a cousin just past away, he was 4 months short of 100 years of age, musta been the lead in his deer meat.
