How do you guys like your sopmod stocks? How much wobble is there between the receiver extention and a sopmod stock? How does it compare to a CTR or UBR in weight and quality? I have a UBR now and am considering a CTR milspec or a Sopmod for a new rifle. I know there in different price ranges. Thanks guys.

ive bought a few LMT lowers, and the first thing I do is sell the SOPMOD and replace it with a CTR. I find the SOPMOD is far too expensive and I get the same feel and performance from the CTR. The latter is also far too bulky and doesn't "look" right (if that matters to you).

my $0.02

The SOPMOD is more comparable to the ACS stock, not the CTR. Different cheek weld, storage.

The ACS is superior in every way, including price (Half of the SOPMOD). Much better all purpose stock, especially shooting prone.

Another vote for the ACS. As I like that slab of metal that they inserted in the butt stock & the UBR storage compartment.

I personally like the SOPMOD. Its clean and simply, and it feels tighter on a milspec extension than some of the newer magpul stuff. I love magpul, but lately their QC on the CTR seems to be falling down. IMHO.

Of all the AR's that I currently own (over 15) about 2/3 have Sopmods. The rest are Magpul UBR's except for one ACE. Now you know where I stand.

The sopmod is more solid in fit than the ACS,however its sort of priced prohibitive for what you get.

The LMT stock is decent, but a bit outdated. I don't care for the requirement of take it off the extension to get at the storage and the price on them is way too much. imho.

I replaced the SOPMOD on my MWS with a Troy stock. So far I like it very much and the price was within reason.

A Big X2!

SOPMODs are rock-solid. If you look at the ACS, the new HK stock and even in elements of the TROY Battle Axe, you will see, to varying degrees, clear elements of the CRANE/SOPMOD design.

I have several CTRs, two UBRs and an ACS...however, I still go back to the SOPMOD. Everyone I've used or owned has always demonstrated top-notch fit/finish and zero QC issues with them. And, unlike many of its rivals, there is no rattle and shake that you get with so many others.

There is a reason why spec ops units such as the SEALS chose it. They're looking for performance and dependability and forget all the rest of the Gucci crap and "Look Cool Factor."

The SOPMOD pictured above is the "old" design and was replaced a couple of years ago with this current version...

Nice collection Beltfed. I am currently building mine. Whats that on the far left? RFB maybe? If so that one will be in my collection as well. Have one on pre-order now.

Thanks for the replies guys. I appreciate it. What about the weight? How would the Sopmod compare to the CTR? Thanks for the info Questar. I am interested in the LMT Defender 2000 MRP 14.5 thats what started this thread. Cheap collapsible with immediate upgrade or with Sopmod? That is the question. If I decide on it it will be from you guys.

A little history on the SOPMOD Stocks;

COLT ACR stock designed for the ACR program from the mid 80's
This was effectively the SOPMOD Stock with no battery compartment.
We have a few up in the museum.

In the early 90's Dave Armstrong at Crane liked the ACR stock, and certain SOCOM entities had 'pirated' them for their M4's, Dave wanted a method to put batteries for their PEQ's and SF lights in the stock so to have mid mission replacement ability on the gun.

Crane started making these stocks in the late 90's

In the ealy 2000's Crane offered the TDP up for bidders, ARMS and LMT where folks who submitted bids to produce them.
LMT won and had the SOPMOD stocks produced to for them and USSOCOM.

Recently LMT lost that contract to a new company in 2010 and BB5 Systems from Ohio is now making them and selling them to the Army for $25.00

In my opinion, the SOMOD was a great stock - however its been far eclipsed by the CTR and ACS stock from MAGPUL, and thats evolution for you.

Dave Armstrong let his patent expire in 2009 (IIRC) so manufacturers like Magpul and VLTOR etc no longer have to make modules for the battery compartments but can mold them right into the stock.

Some of the magpul stocks are getting more complicated than it is needed for a stock ( like the friction lock thingy and side trap doors?) CTR, Crane or the Troy battle axe ( I prefer rubber back plate for shooting instead of metal back plates) are all functional stocks. I really do not think you need to worry about too much about durability and reliability as long as you stick with magpul, LMT and Troy (or even the older Colt Gen 3).

O, I am not worried about durability or reliability. Mainly weight and stock to receiver extension fit/wobble. Wobble really bothers me. Thats why I have a UBR. Very little wobble. Nice to meet you by the way Greentips. Great site you have here. Keep up the good work and thanks.

Thank you very much for the history lesson KevinB. I appreciate it.

SOPMOD was a good stock for it's time but it is heavy and lacks a lock, requiring new rubber bands frequently. Not a big deal but technology has progressed...CTR is best bang for your buck now.
