Peep sight or scope?

Alright, so I'll be going on my first deer hunt this fall and I plan on bringing my Henry 30-30 with me. w:h: Problem is, I'm really not crazy about the semi-buckhorn sights that came on it. Not sure what it is, I just find them awkward to use and I don't want to be trying to line up my sights on the off-chance I actually get a shot at a deer.

So... here's my question: Should I be going with a peep sight or a low-power scope? I'm comfortable with scopes, never used peeps but heard good things. I'm looking at the Skinner sights right now and they look pretty sweet.

Thoughts? Opinions? Or should I just suck it up and deal with the stock sights?

Phone Williams and get a set for it.
Order up the firesight front, aperture rear and don't look back. [They come as a set]
Highly visible and instant sight picture.
I have these on two leverguns, and I love them.
Eagleye.

Personally, I don't really care that much about the aesthetics of my hunting tools.
If you want something really fast, look at what CQB gamers mount on their rifles, it doesn't get much faster than a parallax-free red-dot.
Put the dot on the spot, and Bob's-your-uncle!
You might also want to think about a very low powered variable, with the low-end of 1x or 1.5x, you can still look through with both eyes open easily (*) and with a high-end of something like 4x or 6x, allows for some more precision, if you have the time.

(*) Yes, I know there are people that can shoot 30x scopes with both eyes open and unobstructed; but I'm not one, and probably the OP isn't either.

A good set of Williams peep sights on an easy handling lever are money when your humping the brush and need to snap off a quick shot in the vitals. If your planning on hunting thick bush, this is how I would go. Scopes are more than a little cumbersome when trying to find a spooked deer, peeps are ready to rock as soon as you shoulder your rifle.

Peep. Scopes on .30-30's are just wrong.

Haha that's kind of my feeling too. It just looks weird.

The Skinner sights are tops, very solid, but I like them with a firesight front.

I like the fact that Skinner makes a peep specifically for the Henry 30-30s. I could only see Winchester and Marlin sights on the Williams website.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I use the peep and a firesight on mine. Love it. For casual plinking, etc, I use the small screw in insert in the peep. For hunting, I screw in a larger aperture.

Fast and accurate. An open sight covers the bottom half of the target. A peep does not.

Scopes are a superior aiming device, faster, clearer, more precise. That said, there are some very good aperture sights that will work well with your levergun, and will probably get the job done very well without messing around with some side mount contraption.:)

Some people have a tough time grasping the peep concept, maybe see if you can get some range time with peeps before you decide?

Scopes or dots are easy for most people, just gotta remember trigger pull.

If you can't see the front site you probably can't see anything to shoot at :D

hey my DISTANCE vision is probablly better than most peoples- it's just things that are about a yard away( which is roughly where the front sight is) i can't see- 2 or 3 miles, i can see flies- and no, they're not "floaters" from cataracts/glaucoma- really, with a handle like senior, i expected more from you

Personally, I think peep sights are just plain silly. Look at the wall, now look at the wall through a TP tube. Why would you voluntarily narrow your vision by 90%?
The worst is when you see one on a blr or 94, which both have excellent sights.

That being said, we had a marlin once, and the only thing I didn't like about it was that rear sight, so I do understand the op's position.

Whatever you do, make sure you can put it back to original condition in case you ever want to sell it. There's a couple rifles that keep coming up on the ee, and I know in my case the reason they've not sold is the owner has only the stupid peep sight, no original.
