Recommend a gun for me?

The Chiappa and M&P are pinned because the companies also have pistol versions of those models that use the exact same magazines. I suggest getting the SR-22 because of the GSG 110 drum that's coming out soon.

I thought you couldn't have 20-30 rd mags.

The only magazines that have capacity limits are those designed for semi-auto center fire rifles and shotguns (5 rnds) and pistols (10 rounds). Rimfire rifle magazines, and magazines designed for use in manual action firearms have no regulated capacity.

The best recommendation for a beginner's .22 rifle is a Ruger 10/22. It won't have the tacticool factor, but there are so many accessories that you'll run out of choices before quitting.

Until you get comfortable with owning and shooting comes the hard part of learning about guns. There is a lot of stuff on the net that doesn't show up in your local gunstore. When you see something you like, get used to not having it.

Can I offer an alterniative?

QUESTAR

A Real AR with a dedicated .22 cal upper (that can use 50 round drums). At some point you can just buy an .223 AR upper and slap it on the top and you are good to go.

Yup, buy an AR and go to Questar to get a .22 kit. They warranted mine no questions asked, 6 months after i bought it. Im told its rare that the firing pins break as mine did and even then it was not a hassle as the guys had a replacement out to me in days.

I personally love my SR-22, can shoot it wherever you want and has the reliable 10/22 action. Field stripping is a little more difficult (need a torx screwdriver and punch set) but once you do it once its easy.

Also looking very forward to the drum mag!!

I got my S&W M&P 15-22 before they banned the standard capacity mags. So I ordered a legal 50 rd. drum. from Questar. Problem solved. And the worlds a safer place now, aparently.

I've personally found the Mossberg Tactical quite innacurate. Those sights are garbage.

I agree. I had no luck with the issue sites. I mounted a red dot on the front rail and removed the rear apreture to get a cleaner field of view. Not bad accuracy (pop can size groups at 50 yrds) if I try.

Will work fine for my kids I think.

EDIT: The Mossberg Tactical 22 is a poor example of a dedicated 22 AR. The controls are not even close. If you want an AR type 22, by a dedicated one with the correct controls. And yeah, field stripping will not be easy.

I'm a newbie and researched and researched and ordered my first rifle... Then another, and another, then a pistol, then impulse purchased a rifle from a walk-in store...

Don't worry about your first one; buy anything and be happy. Trust me you WILL buy more :). I thought my first one had to be the perfect compromise in everything I wanted - calibre, look, length, use, but now understand it's so addictive you will eventually own/trade/borrow them all!

Go with your first instinct - you will sleep with it the first night no matter what you pick ;)

Get those courses done and see you at the range!
