you should remove the fur first, it will taste better ;)

Why use an uderpowered airgun on live targets.Get something with a little punch like an HW80 like I got.It drops squirrels dead with one shot.177 is fine for rodents as long as it is traveling at over 800 fps.

The 500 fps firearm boundry simplifies storage and transport when under it. i got a crosman phantom .22 pellet rifle this spring, just did a head shot on a squirrel and it pinned him on the spot. It really smacks trees and such too, hits hard. Accurate gun too, I'm really happy for $100 at Walmart...

ya i got phantom 500 .22cal to love it, got a center point scope mounted on it. its alot better that the ruger explorer

Rowland89,

Welcome to the board. Seeing as you're new you may not have noticed this thread was started Mar 2009. It's almost 2 years old! But it was a good thread. :)

We have both Red and Grey's in my community and I have a 177 that I use for both. Shot placement is everything IMO. If you can shoot one in the head that is usually all it takes. But it is an old pellet gun with poor sight so lots or tree rats get away. Two or three shots at one that is stunned or wounded is normal. Good shooting .

177 for squirrels

Well many years ago I cut my shooting teeth useing my Dads Slavia 620 and too many critters sucumbed to it . I do remember shooting a squirrel in the backyard many years ago and only wounding it . I had to finnish it off with a shovel before a neighbour saw what I was up to . I did'nt like it at all . if your going to use a pellet gun make sure it has enough veclocity to kill things right out .

I have a neighbour who's a retired policeman and he told me his pellet gun which shoots over a 1000fps can kill racoons . he's an avid hunter so I know he not shooting me some BS. do it right the first shot .

the crosman 1377 will drop them out to 10 yards with a chest shot

i find most guns that say 495 fps are going way slower could just be the guns ive used

495fps with a mushroom/pointed .177 will be fine against grouse, rabbit, squirrels and rats. Just make sure you know your rifle. Before my firearm days, it was all I used.

In BC, we can't use air rifles on grouse.

But if we could, my CZ 200T would be murder on them!
I took a few squirrels on our property that wouldn't leave the cabin attic alone, from 20yds up to 40 yds - and the pellets went right through them. Instant kills. But thats over 1000 fps.
Super-accurate rifles!

Uhhmmmmm, why would you think that?
***************************************************************************

This is a can of worms...... :)

I am willing to stand corrected, but as far as I know, it says in the regs that legal hunting methods for Grouse are shotgun, centerfire and rimfire.

Obviously pellet pistols are out of the question, but the regs do not mention pellet rifles as a "legal hunting method".

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that a LOT of pellet rifles out there do not have the energy needed to make humane kills on grouse.
Of course, many do..... but it might be easier for them to just say "no pellet rifles" than to try to regulate which rifles are allowed and which are not?

Anyways, I'm all for air rifles on grouse if the rifle and shooter are up to it.

clean kill and skinned out 12 ga single full choke.....lol the gamo whispers is what i would get to dispatch pest and would be good for partridge.

I shot a squirrel once with a 12ga full choke as well. Did you use a cooey single shot too?

Did that once and figured vaporizing a squirrel, although it certainly died quick, was a bit overkill.

The regs aren't the law, just a synopsis. And while they do provide an overview of legal methods, it doesn't list ALL legal methods. For instance, its legal to hunt with a spear, but you don't see that listed......

You can't hunt with a pellet pistol, as pistols are specifically prohibited, and that pellet pistol loophole was closed a few years ago.

Pellet rifles, slingshots, rocks, sticks, string on a stick, all legal methods.

And energy is always trumped by placement.....
