fellow CGN'ers:

I'm looking for more insight into the world of black and assault rifles.
The CZ and the AR are the only platforms that I am considering at this time.
I've read many a thread here and there for both platforms and at this time my firearm compass pointing ever so slightly towards the CZ858 platform for the following reasons:

1. Ammunition cost: at this time there is no contest which has more value especially with the current availability of surplus ammo. This is a huge factor in terms or over-all range and trigger time.

2. Long-run cost/tempation to 'Magpulize' AKA modern Bubba-ization: the CZ looks to be like your no-nonsense pitbull of a rifle. It may never win ' best of show' but it packs a sweet punch. The acquisition of an AR falls too much into the temptation of tacticool "Gucci" add-ons (Magpul and the likes). This rifle is definitely the Honda Civic of the carbine world when it comes to dressing up firearms for either function or useless s**t. (This however is not the subject at hand, and there probably is another 20 threads about this). That being said, choosing a CZ may aid in staying away from the Gucci-ness as the AR definitely has the largest aftermarket support (not to say that the CZ/VZ platform doesn't already have it's growing share of aftermarket support).

3. the case for restricted versus non-restricted: there is no true AR out there with non-restricted status and seeing that CZ's primary variants are between barrel lengths, this is negligible for me.

thanks in advance for any input.

Some thoughts in favor of the AR: 10 shot magazines and easy mounting of optics. That said, I like the 858, but would probably just shoot it bone stock with iron sights.

CZ all the way, i've ran over 2000 round this year through mine, lots of mods for it, lots of ways to mount optics. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to run.

Down side is if you use corrsive ammo, u will be cleaning it more.

oh and Non restricted, so hunting, and target :)

I've had both.
A 7.5"bbl AR with a NXS 1x-4 and a CSA 11" VZ58.
For my range use (25-100yrds) I prefer the light weight and KISS setup of the VZ58 with irons. 7.62x39 has more fun felt recoil and is cheaper to shoot(especially the corrosive stuff).
The AR is gone ...may get another oneday but I'm in no hurry now.

....I should've read the OP's question!

The Cz 858's biggest advantage is the non-resricted status.
The AR is more accurate and easier to scope.
But you can only shoot paper at the range.
Best entertainment value and practicable use goes to the 858.
IMO

I have the CZ, get to fire it at my son's farm. Would not be able to do that with the AR. CZ is a lot cheaper too. That said, I also like the AR, don't have one yet, but soon as I get my restricted, it's on my must buy list.

The CZ shoots every bit as well as an AR. One of the guys on here had sub MOA groups using czech surplus ammo too. It is an exceptional rifle in stock form and that's exactly how I like it. Beaver puke and all. :D

i absolutely have no regret buying my cz ... its amazing ... and i can hit a 6 inch steel plate from 200 yards iron sights no problem ... unless im hung over ... but yeah ...

Are you a range shooter or a "field" shooter.
Is ammo cost a big issue for you?
Do you plan to reload (7.62X39 brass is hard to find)

I own both.
Accuracy is on par with each other.
Sights are good on both but one is an aperture the other open sights.
10 round mags are a big deal for me.
I think my AR is more fun to shoot so it sees a lot more rounds in a year.
I really want a Robarms XCR in 7.62X39 for AR ergonomics with cheap ammo.

10 shot mags are a great point. 2 of my buddies are AR whores and with the RRA LAR 10 shot 'pistol' carbine mags they swear it makes a huge difference when it comes to shooting at our gun club's action range. I can see from a convenience stand-point how big deal this can be, especial during tactical shooting.

kudos for the responses so far.

one post asked if ammo price is a factor. it's a huge factor and value is big thing for me --- that's probably the reason why I own a couple of SKS's --- coz' the ammo is very affordable (for now anyway)

another poster asked if I was a range or 'field' shooter --- well, I only shoot at the range right now, and I don't see myself hunting anytime soon. However, having a non-restricted rifle, I can see, will definitely have its advantages if an opportunity ever presented itself that was related to 'field' shooting, private property and crapload of tin cans.

the AR seems to be more of an Americanized throat-pusher when it comes to what is thrown by you by the firearms industry and Canada's affinity to the US. That being said, I'd still probably like to own one eventually - but bottom line for me is mucho trigger time.:D

No I will not convince you, your not worthy. Just buy an AR and you won't know what your missing.JK. I prefer the penetration a surplus steal core round will do compared to the .223 FMJ.
